Whoever thought cardboard could be so funky? Charigami (yes, a portmanteau of chair and origami) has concocted a line of furniture pieces that are exclusively crafted from cardboard materials. The results are as expected: unique and, more importantly, low carbon in nature. And, as far as range goes, the collection includes a plethora of items including coffee tables, chairs, shelves, desks, lounge chairs and even iPhone stands and covers.

In the middle of the last century, design pioneers like Alvar Aalto and Charles and Ray Eames began experimenting with bent plywood. By laminating thin veneers of wood, they were able to make organic curved forms that conformed smoothly to the body. Inspired by these masters, Will Holman has been working with a similarly humble material – corrugated cardboard. When clamped into a mold and adhered with wheat paste, cardboard can also be molded into curved shapes. These ergonomic panels are light, cheap, and recycled from alley-salvaged moving boxes. Mounted to a plywood frame, the resultant chair is an exercise in economy, utility, honesty, and simplicity.

Cardboard continues to show us that it knows no bounds, and this cute little treasure chest by cARTón muebles ecológicos is another great example of how with the right amount of creativity, the corrugated material can be transformed into a coveted piece of decor. Led by Zafra Miriam, cARTón muebles ecológicos focuses on using cardboard to create permanent pieces that are durable and can bear a tremendous amount of weight — all while being very lightweight themselves. Each piece incorporates recycled cardboard and newspaper, a mix of white glue and flour paste, and a small amount of gesso for smoothing the surface, sealed with water-based polyurethane. Designs are custom-made, and clients can work with Miriam to create a piece that meets their size and decor needs. Check out her site here for more information and to see other pieces!

Groopti – the website that combines crowdsourcing with bespoke manufacturing – just unveiled its latest cardboard creation, this time from designer Svetlana Kozhenova. Simply called “ECO” this modular set can be used to create tables, chairs, benches, or lounges with slim slots for storing magazines or books. These crevices give ECO blocks the appearance of a perfectly geometric fractured rock, but with the added green benefit of being crafted entirely from recycled cardboard!

Today Groopti expanded their fun cardboard furniture series with their brand new Urban Tree coat hanger. The design was conceived by Gerardo Belmonte and then selected for production using Groopti’s method of crowdsourcing opinions from design enthusiasts. The Urban Tree is composed of 6 legs and 5 rings that are machine cut from 90% recycled corrugated cardboard. Each piece is cut from layers of corrugated board to ensure that the coat stand is extremely sturdy, and the legs and rings can be easily assembled without screws, nails, or adhesives.

Cardboard creations are a fun and sustainable way to switch up your home decor with a minimal carbon impact. Built from recyclable cardboard tubes, FanTubes is a cool creation from Italian designers Paola Argine and Cristina Alzati of Double-ei. Each FanTubes set consists of two tables and three chairs, each composed of 300 cardboard tubes of various heights, lots of wire and plexiglass. Cut and constructed by hand, this quirky design will fit just about any decor — the luxurious Palace Grand Hotel in Varese, Italy even used the chairs at a recent event they hosted!
