This year at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, something menacing was lurking among the tables and chairs. D-torso brought a giant 3D T-Rex made completely from cardboard. Standing a bit taller than an average human, the sculpture dominated the exhibit. Using laser-cut technology to bring the dino to life, the sculpture appeared as a mesh between the modern and the prehistoric.

Marta Crass created this incredibly realistic cardboard camera without the use of any precision machining tools (like laser cutters or plotters). Measuring 6.5” x 4.5”, the replica camera is modeled after a 1960s-era Nikon camera given to Crass by her grandfather. Although it doesn’t take pictures, the beautifully crafted camera showcases the potential of recycled cardboard – and it can be yours for $150.

Designer Niklas Roy has created an incredible miniature plotter made from Finnish cardboard, rubber bands, glue, tape, glue, and a welding rod. Roy designed the gadget while teaching a workshop at the School of Art and Design at Offfenbach on building digital devices out of cardboard. The device uses a pen to draw line art across a grid, producing vectorized graphics. A small code book with coordinates for several drawings lets the user move the x and y switches that control the pen’s coordinates, letting the plotter function as a simple, low-tech version of a home printer.

Box-framed beds are boring compared to these wonderful birdsnest beds designed by O*GE Creative Group. Designed to inspire new ideas, the circular beds come in three different sizes with the largest being 4.5 meter wide and big enough to fit up to 16 (relatively small) people. Cardboard pieces on the outside resemble twigs, while the bed itself is as soft and cuddly as clouds.

Hoping to make some big noise for a little car, Mini Cooper tapped artist Bartek Elsner to design and construct a giant boombox made of cardboard. Debuting at the International Radio Festival in Zürich, the massive structure acted as a shell for the car, which could be seen through a open space in the back of the blaster. Made primarily to showcase the car’s sound system, the vehicle’s speakers pumped noise to passing crowds through its elaborate retro costume.

The Pause chair is a rocking chaise lounge made from a cardboard structure covered with two felt mats. The felt cushions are attached to the chair with rope instead of screws or glue. Designed by Piquattropunto design studio, the Pause chaise lounge is completely recyclable and weighs in at about 150 kgs.

At this year’s Milan Furniture Fair, IED Barcelona and Madrid showcased student work that stood out for their social impact and eco-friendly materials. Furniture retailer Ikea just announced plans to swap out wooden shipping pallets in favor of new lightweight cardboard pallets – and although this isn’t a change that customers will be able to see, the company expects to see a decrease in transport costs amounting to 140 million euros ($193 million). The thinner, lighter, and cheaper cardboard pallets will be sourced from local suppliers and they can support the same amount of weight as the wooden versions The only thing is that the cardboard pallets can only be used once, meaning that they will be discarded and recycled afterwards. Transportation costs may be reduced, but the verdict is still out if this the cardboard pallets are really better in terms of sustainability.

Giles Miller has wooed us with his intricate cardboard creations before, and now he’s brought us the world’s largest cardboard Christmas tree! Standing at roughly 20 feet in the Design Museum London’s public atrium, the tree is comprised of no fewer than 3,600 individually-cut, handmade cardboard pieces. Similar to a fake evergreen, these pieces can be arranged around a central shaft to give the branches that fluid, swirling motion so essential to the nature of a real Christmas tree. Smaller versions of these incredible creations, which Giles designed exclusively for the Design Museum, are on sale to the public. More details after the jump.
