In an installation that stood for peace, artist Sebastian Errazuriz transformed a football stadium into a public park. Chile’s National Stadium was once the site of horrific genocide, a place where former dictator Augusto Pinochet imprisoned and killed thousands of political prisoners in 1973. To honor those lives lost, Errazuriz took over the playing field and planted a 33 foot magnolia in its center, opening the space as a temporary public park he called “the Tree Memorial of a Concentration Camp”.

Located 90 miles away from Santiago, Chile, the city of Chimbarongo has managed economic growth since the beginning of the century thanks to its mimbre tradition. However, this craft is steadily disappearing as young people turn to work in the fields searching for better working conditions and higher wages. In hopes of saving the tradition, Studio Eggpicnic is giving mimbre a contemporary sculptural update with their Amalia seat. The new mimbre construction aims to bring the age-old material to modern times by using it to create unexpected organic forms that are fit for any home or occasion.

With its Multiproposal gallery, Mauricio Silva Arquitectos tackled the question of how to create an inviting public space in Valdivia, a small city in southern Chile where it rains all the time. The solution was a large, mixed-use building containing commercial space, offices and housing that is filled with large courtyards that are protected from the rain. “The main function of these is to link the exterior and interior of the block from the gallery as a space for mediation and where public space is mixed with the commercial one. In Valdivia, a city where it rains most of the time, this type of space is an opportunity to experience the city throughout the year and revitalize the public space and local business,” writes the architect. The courtyards not only give people a public place to go during rainy days, but they also bring natural light into the building. The building would also use groundwater for energy extraction, and it would reuse rainwater.

An ambitious citizen campaign called Reforest Patagonia is hoping to plant one million trees in Chilean Patagonia in what has been considered the largest, most ambitious native tree reforestation campaign in the country’s history. Chile was ravaged by wildfires in 2011, so the project hopes to repopulate the country’s six national parks and reserves.
