A study published in Nature Geoscience concluded that the global demand for fresh water is contributing to the oceans’ rise faster than the impact of global warming on melting glaciers. The trillions of tons of fresh water pumped out of underground aquifers, and then used for irrigation and to keep cities watered and fed is seeping into oceans faster than those underground water supplies can be replenished. The researchers leading the study insist that the impact of humans’ unquenchable usage of water over the past 50 years has been grossly overlooked.

10 Design recently unveiled renders of its futuristic Galaxy Yabao Hi-Tech Enterprises Headquarter Park, which is designed to integrate into the natural landscape of its site in Shenzhen, China. The design is also an examination of the concept of moving “beyond neutrality” on a large-scale, and it incorporates a series of sustainable building strategies. The buildings are designed with facades that neutralize air pollution 24 hours a day, an algae system that produces oxygen, organic fertilizer, and cleans grey water, and a series of subterranean chambers that naturally cool outside air and push it into a series of outdoor courtyards. The buildings take full advantage of technologies that help shape the temperature and air quality of their micro-climate.

China’s pig population is approaching one billion, so you can imagine how much pig poo the nation has at its disposal. One Australian firm, CRC CARE, thinks it can turn all of that waste into much-needed energy. Partnering with Hong Kong technology firm HLM Asia Ltd., CRC CARE has developed the “PooCareTM,” a bioreactor that can be installed below ground at pig farms. The demand in China for pork results in 1.5 million tons of pig waste annually, but because it is so full of nitrates and other contaminants, effluent from pig waste contaminates water and is a massive human health risk. If CRC CARE is successful, they could divert all of that harmful material and get some fuel out of it as well.

Bad news for the fashion industry – nearly 50 major apparel brands have links with factories that have been disregarding China’s environmental laws, according to Cleaning Up the Fashion Industry, a report by five grassroots organizations. While China has put regulations in place to prevent the severe water pollution that comes out of the textile industry, the mandates have insufficient enforcement.  Click ahead to check out which brands are causing the damage and how the industry can move forward with the environment in mind.

New studies are showing that Chinese cities are slowly sinking as a result of rapid development and excess groundwater use. According to reports, as many as 50 cities across the country are affected by soil subsidence, including the country’s largest - Shanghai. Apparently, Shanghai has been slowly sinking for at least 90 years.

Apple might now be considering whether to acquire its own manufacturing or research facilities in the country, according to Bloomberg News.
