There is a lot hanging on the 18th session of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change currently being held in Doha, Qatar, but with many in the media predicting another Copenhagen, some in the Emirate have taken to the street to make their feelings heard.  On Saturday, over 800 people took part in a march for climate protection, believed to be the first demonstration of its kind to take place in Qatar.

In recent years, climate change conferences have had underwhelming results – as the ones in Copenhagen and Bonn showed. However as the 18th session of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) gets underway in Doha, Qatar (the first time an Arab state has hosted the session), there is hope that real change will be made as countries join together under the common goal of reducing global emissions.

The climate change conference in Bonn was supposed to see the creation of a work-plan that would result in a new global climate treaty by 2020. Instead, the talks ended with disappointment, no progress being made, and there are concerns that politics are getting in the way. More disturbingly, it is reported that decisions made during the Durban talks last year are now being undermined.

Britain’s national science academy, the Royal Society, recently organized a conference at Chicheley Hall — 40 miles north of London — where thinkers from around the world gathered to decide if, and how, the international community could implement geoengineering tactics to stop global climate change. If the international community fails to mitigate climate change with policy and infrastructure, we’re going to need to take some drastic measures to keep the planet inhabitable. The attendees at the conference decided that though the full consequences are unknown, the only real plan that would work would be to block out the sun.

The COP15 climate conferences kicked off this week and as predicted, several key points dominated the focus of the media’s coverage. The plan of attack for how rich countries and poorer countries will clean up their acts collaboratively took center stage, and the world continued to turn their gaze towards President Obama to see how low the U.S. can go (or high, in terms of emissions cuts percentages) in this global warming limbo to rehabilitate our country.
