A year ago we showed you Prinzessinnengarten, a mobile urban garden that blooms in Berlin. Well, in addition to growing lots of organic vegetables, they also organize open events centered around food. Last week we were at ‘Cooking With Mama‘, a social gathering where artist Hiwa K. cooked up vegetables leftover from local markets as he followed his Iraqi mum’s instructions via Skype!

A new brand of DIY self-sufficiency is spreading across The Netherlands. Skilled craftswomen, mechanics, seamstresses, and handypersons are banding together to resist disposable consumer culture. It is the rise of the Repair Cafe, a place where neighbors get together to extend the life of their material belongings. “Fixers” mend clothes, restore furniture, rehabilitate electrical appliances, and enjoy each other’s company while industriously toiling away. The first cafe was founded by Martine Postma in Amsterdam in October of 2009. Today, there are 20 fully operational Repair Cafes, and 50 more in the planning stages.

MVRDV and ADEPT Architects recently unveiled a beautiful new cultural center for Frederiksberg, Denmark that will take advantage of solar technology and a host of green building strategies. The House of Culture and Movement, seen over at Dezeen, is an architectural experience to will encourage community activity with a community center, exhibition and performance spaces, a playground, a park and a health center.

Many villagers in rural India are in need of clean, safe toilet facilities and places to wash laundry. Seeking to provide a solution to this pressing need, the National Foundation for India asked New Dehli-based Vir.Mueller Architects to come up with a prototype for a public sanitation facility that could be built locally, emits no waste, and most importantly prevents groundwater contamination from the existing septic tank-based toilets. Vir.Mueller responded with the Delwara Community Toilets plan, which features composting toilets, captures rainwater, and serves a vital community space.

When the Portola Valley School District realized its mid-century single-room schoolhouse straddled the San Andreas Fault — known for its earthquakes — they sold off the site to the town. Could the middle of the ocean offer sustainable dwelling places for mankind in the future? Estonian architect Marko Järvela of Hirvesoo Arhitektibüroo, winner of the aesthetics category in the first design competition for seasteading, believes that sustainable water-locked living could in fact become a wonderful reality. He saw designing “SESU Seastead” (short for SElf-SUstained seastead), as an opportunity to find the reality in ideas that are “balancing at the edge of utopian.” Järvela says that his winning design for a mini-society in the ocean is based on a self-sufficient lifestyle that requires a rearrangement of priorities.
