In the crusade to cut global CO2 emissions, we tend look to power plants, cars, and manufacturing. Nowadays, our building materials are also garnering attention, and researchers from Kansas State University have developed a type of concrete made from biofuel waste that has a lower carbon footprint than conventional concrete. The world uses about 7 billion cubic meters of the mixture each year, making it the most utilized industrial material after water. Taking advantage of the byproducts from biofuel production such as corn stover, wheat straw, and rice straw, the team was able to create a stronger concrete and save excess material from ending up in the landfill.

Cracks are a road’s worst enemy. Once a crack forms, water is able to enter the paved surface, and when it expands and contracts with changes in temperature it destroys the road. A group of scientists in South Korea have developed a new self-healing concrete coating that they claim can automatically seal cracks, preventing water from entering the material. The high-tech coating is both inexpensive and environmentally friendly, they say, because it could greatly reduce the need to regularly rebuild roads, bridges, and other concrete structures.

Waste doesn’t always look like discarded soda bottles or piles of unwanted newspaper. Humans are constantly altering their environments to serve a new purpose or accommodate a new need. We tear down, erect, and renovate buildings constantly, and the result is millions of tons of building rubble. Until recently, the only way to recycle concrete waste was to smash it up and use it as a base layer for roads. Now, researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics have developed a better way: use lightning to break separate concrete debris into its most basic, and reuseable, parts.

Recycling cans couldn’t get much quirkier or more lovable than these PACMAN containers that gobble-up garbage like their computerized namesake. Designed by Portuguese studio AND-RÉ, the cans are simple round items of urban furniture that help residents of Vilamoura separate out their trash. Each one is identified with a mouth in a starkly different color – blue, yellow, black or green – which makes recycling even easier than before.
