Edinburgh-based Sofant just unveiled a new micro SmartAntenna at CES 2013 that could potentially double the battery life of today’s smartphones while easing network congestion. The tiny antenna is purported to consume 90 percent less energy that the current technologies while eliminating problems such as dropped calls and poor signal quality.

Google no longer has a monopoly on driverless vehicles. Lexus has unveiled a sneak preview of its luxury LS model equipped with proprietary Intelligent Transport Systems technology, including an on-board radar and video cameras that allow the car to function without the assistance of a driver. The luxury arm of Toyota Motor Corporation, Lexus will exhibit its self-driving automobile at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which opens to the public on Tuesday.

The model is a zero-emissions, all-electric version of the company’s most popular small car, the Focus. This week Ford teased the imminent unveiling of the Focus EV by releasing a single image on Facebook showcasing the vehicle’s illuminated, Tron-like plug port. As you’d expect from Ford on the release of such an anticipated vehicle, details are scarce — but CEO Alan Mulally said the company will have big news from the 2011 International CES Las Vegas. He added that Ford would broadcast his keynote address on a live streaming Facebook tab that will also feature exclusive technology news every hour leading up to his address.

If you’re looking for something with a little more superhero panache, check out what Asus just unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show – the insanely futuristic Waveface Ultra. It’s a superthin, flexible OLED wristband cell phone that you can snap onto your wrist, sort of like those outlawed slap bracelets from the 90s (remember those?). And the kicker? You can control it by magically gesturing your fingers – touchscreen is so very 2009.

Every year the Consumer Electronic’s Show (CES) raises the bar for must-have gadgets and appliances of the coming year. Whether or not 2008′s CES will be greener than ever won’t be evident until all of the latest, greatest new technologies are reviewed. A key component in greening the electronics industry, though, is improved efficiency between the myriad devices in our home or office and their conventional power adapters and energy sources. Green Plug, a realtime power adapter and green front runner at CES, aims to eliminate this waste and inefficiency by streamlining how multiple devices ‘talk’ to their power sources via a ‘one plug’ set up and Green Talk technology.

Laptops have a long way to go in order to really go green, but Fujitsu has certainly made an interesting attempt with their new corn-based polymer laptop. Launching at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Fujitsu is finally bringing to the US market a laptop with a casing made out of corn. In case you’re wondering, this biopolymer is based on the same PLA components that are becoming more common for biodegradable plastic beverage cups.

Walking the showroom floor at CES this year, we’re overwhelmed by the products on display, but underwhelmed by the lack of design innovation from a sustainability perspective. However, one innovation that got our attention is Samsung Electronics Super Thin 31” OLED TV Screen, one of the largest and thinnest OLED TV screens to date. Based on organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology, this product offers brighter, more vivid pictures while using less power than a regular TV. The best part is that OLED technology allows for a super thin and sleek package, proving that sustainability can be sexy – even in consumer electronics!

There will be a panel discussion about electronic recycling on Tuesday afternoon, Nicholas Negroponte of One Laptop Per Child will be speaking Wednesday, and we will be combing the showroom floor to bring you the latest greener gadgets highlights such as the Samsung OLED screen, Fujitsu Corn Laptop, and Greenplug. We’re particularly interested this year as CES pertains to our upcoming Greener Gadgets Conference on February 1st.
