This brilliant SolPix LED wall combines three of our favorite things: energy efficient lighting, solar power, and bling. The giant media wall is embedded with LED lights and a photovoltaic array, plus it can also function as a set of heavy-duty blinds — each piece shifts according to the focus of sunlight. The SolPix is the largest prototype of it’s kind and will go on display this Friday at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum’s Design Triennial in New York City. The theme this year is tackling the world’s greatest problems, and the SolPix is one flashy answer to our big energy issue.

The Rockefeller Foundation just awarded the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City $600,000 to make its 2007 Design for the Other 90% exhibition into an ongoing series. Inhabitat reported on the exhibition when it took place in 2007 and we were amazed by the innovation on display. So much of the great design we see is focused on the wealthiest 10% of the population, it’s nice to know that Cooper-Hewitt will be able to highlight more of the cutting-edge sustainable technology that is designed for the developing world.

One outing that will definitely be on my agenda the next time I’m in New York City is to visit the third Triennial exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. On view now through July 29, 2007 Design Life Now demonstrates how design permeates every aspect of contemporary life and showcases the best in experimental design and emerging ideas at the center of American culture from 2003 to 2006.

On display at the Cooper Hewitt back in 2003, Smartwrap is a thin plastic film designed to envelop a building, acting as a multi-tasking, intelligent wall. Smartwrap integrates the currently segregated functions of a conventional wall and combines them into one crazy high-tech composite. It insulates, stores energy, and digitally regulates temperature, as well as providing and controlling light. Users can program different panels to light up, display an image, or switch from transparent to opaque as needed.
