Yesterday UK Prime Minister David Cameron reshuffled his cabinet in the first major restructuring since the coalition Conservative-Lib Dem government came to power in 2010. One of the major cabinet changes was that of Environment Secretary – former Northern Ireland secretary Owen Paterson took over from Caroline Spelman. However green groups have expressed their concern saying that Paterson’s track record does not bode well for the environment.

The Rio+20 Conference (20 years after the original Earth Summit) was called to bring together world leaders, along with thousands of participants from governments, the private sector, NGOs and other groups in order to discuss how the world can reduce poverty, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection on a planet with an ever-increasing population. However even before the conference started, it received a body blow with news that world leaders US President Barack Obama, U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel would not be attending. Now there is word that low goals and in-fighting are raising fears that Rio+20 could fail to make any impact leading an academic panel to voice their concerns.

Environmental campaigners have decided that the key to preventing climate change is not to focus on the natural impact, but something that everyone cares about – our energy bills. It makes sense – people are more likely to care about alternative energy and the environment if their gas and electricity bills are soaring through the roof. As a result, Greenpeace has urged UK Prime Minister David Cameron to “take personal responsibility for protecting consumers from high energy prices” and delivered a giant bill to energy giant Centrica HQ.

Off of England’s southern coast, the Isle of Wight is developing the largest sustainability project in the country. By 2020, “Eco Island” will become a net exporter of energy, and residents will see their electricity bills drop by 50%. The island will become a precedent for renewable energy and sustainability practices, and an example of Prime Minister David Cameron’s “Big Society” concept for the UK.
