This simple but fun table is made from reclaimed Douglas Fir beams, which were collected from buildings in Los Angeles that were set to be torn down. Neatly stacked, the ‘hollowed out’ gaps give the end table a slightly lighter feel, while the intersecting pattern provides a playful appeal reminiscent of the game Jenga. <a href="http://www.viesso.com/koper-15-x-15-reclaimed-wood-end-table.html"">Viesso produces this table locally in Los Angeles, and it’s preserved with linseed oil and a matte low-VOC finish.

South of downtown Seattle is an old Boeing airplane assembly plant that produced nearly 7000 Flying Fortresses while hidden beneath a roof with a fake suburban neighborhood on top. The site is now the source for a huge lumber salvage operation – Duluth Timber Company is now deconstructing the 1.7 million square foot facility and reclaiming the lumber for real homes. The beauty of reclaimed lumber is not just in its quality and size but in its history – and the 1/4 million board feet that will come out of this deconstruction has a lot of tales to tell.

The Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) at the University of Stuttgart just unveiled a concept home that is not just net zero — it’s actually designed to generate excess energy to charge electric cars within its futuristic carport. Similar to many of the homes in the solar decathlon, this home is packed to the gills with integrated green technologies and fed by huge rooftop solar electric and thermal arrays. The home has an open face to the street side that showcases its systems with a interactive display — it’s essentially a show room of integrated sustainable design and transportation for the future, and it’s set to be built in Berlin by the German government. Now you can have a house to go with your new Nissan Leaf or Chevy Volt.
