It’s a sad day for publishing as ReadyMade, one of our favorite shelter mags, has closed its doors for good. The trailblazing DIY magazine was shuttered today by parent company Meredith Corporation as part of a $10 million charge to cut costs. ReadyMade Magazine hit the sweet spot between the high-end world of modern design and the crunchy roots of traditional craft. It made do-it-yourself design relevant and approachable to thousands of readers and helped spur a renaissance in handmade designs that utilize locally-sourced and recycled materials. The news saddens me on a personal level as well, as I first dived into publishing at Readymade — I can still remember assembling projects in the magazine’s old office by the San Francisco Bay, and the thrill of seeing my first words set in print. ReadyMade, you will be missed.

COOLS Kit is not a new piece of crazy-shaped furniture or recycled cardboard household object – it’s an amazing set of hand-tools with connectors meant for building just about anything you can imagine! We’ve featured cardboard furniture here at Inhabitat loads of times before, but we love how this set of chaise lounges, tables and chairs by Antonela Dada y Bruno Sala gives recycled cardboard tubes a second chance to escape the landfill. Cardboard is light, foldable, easily recycled, biodegradable and most importantly, a very cheap and readily available material.

A functional flatpack shelving system set to unfold at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair, this recyclable design by the Parisian duo of NOCC is a practical DIY storage unit that can be built in a variety of ways, adapting to individual space and functional needs. Dubbed ‘Element’ the entire piece actually consists of a simple 1mm sheet of aluminum that has been laser-cut to be folded and assembled with ease to fit perfectly with your existing decor.

Bariloche-based designer Manuel Rapoport has built himself a stunning studio house clad in used tomato can tiles in the midst of Patagonia’s dense wilderness. The shiny house was built with tins leftover from local bars and restaurants, which are preserved with a protective coat of varnish every 6 years. “Manu”, the designer-maker, has always been interested in recycling and the use of readily available resources – he says “I don’t need to use titanium to have my very own Guggenheim, I can use tomato tins.”
