Nearly 30 million trees are cut down every day, leaving a trail of devastation behind. While there’s no quick recovery for our forest friends, designer Hongtao Zhou‘s tree stump lounge chair turns a sad situation into something inspiring. Each quirky chair is formed from a larger-than-life axe planted in a stump, while a second reclaimed tree trunk serves as an ottoman.

When Joe Manus, founder of Shiner, was 7 he was punched in the eye. This dark memory stayed with him his entire life, eventually influencing his design work today. Built to look tough, dark and damaged, Manus’ amazing rocking bed aptly embodies his past experience, fusing it with the spirit of his materials — all of which have been sourced from the scrap and garbage piles of industrial manufacturing sites. The Shiner rocking bed is a minimalist construction, and stands at any angle using rubber floor stoppers making it an interesting addition to any home.

Finding their roots in America’s heartland, these elegant limited-edition accent pieces are made from salvaged wood reclaimed from Thomas Edison’s old phonograph factory in New London, Wisconsin. Each piece is individually hand-shaped and finished by master craftsmen, and they can be used as stools or end tables. They’re available from Room&Board in a variety of styles, but as with all limited-edition pieces, quantities won’t last for long.

Spotted on Designboom, this monobloc stackable chair by Werner Aisslinger features a refined modern form. The aptly-named ‘hemp chair’ is made from natural fibers like hemp that have been molded under heat with a special non-toxic, eco-friendly glue. Essentially a single, thin sheet of composite material, the chair is surprisingly lightweight, strong, and features delicate curves which give it an inimitable visual complexity. Aisslinger’s unique process allows for the low-cost mass production of each piece, but not at the cost of the environment.

If your collection of t-shirts is worn beyond repair, then turn them into a funky new chair full of memories! To create her original T-shirt Chair, Maria Westerberg wove together shirts from forty of the designer’s friends along with other once-treasured textiles to create a colorful mosaic of her personal history. Smitten with the idea, manufacturer Berhin Studios is now producing the chairs from a mix of colorful fabric pieces leftover from sofa manufacturing. The T-shirt Chair can also be purchased as a plain frame so you can personalize it with your own worn-out clothes, t-shirts and other textiles. The T-shirt Chair is the winner of the 2011 Green Furniture Award.

It never ceases to surprise us that much of good, sustainable design is also deliciously fun. Take Debbie Wijskamp’s paperpulp cabinets, for instance. They are what their name implies: drawers and shelves made out of pureed paper mache. And while I want to write sophisticated sentences with phrases like ‘materials reuse’ and ‘resource conservation,’ I just can’t help thinking about how glorious it must be, in a third-grade sort of way, to mash paper into furniture. Wijskamp’s process validates these daydreams.

The serene back-and-forth movement of a rocking chair is nothing if not relaxing. It can also be useful and productive, according to Rochus Jacob. The designer’s Murakami Chair, a winner in designboom’s Green Life competition, uses the kinetic energy produced by rocking to power an attached OLED lamp.

And if you are like us, you want to be locating yourself on a nice bench or stool that is sustainably sourced and constructed. There is certainly no shortage of functional and eco-friendly furniture to be found out there, and this is what we noticed this week in the blog-o-sphere.

Notcot features a modular and biodegradable lounging chair made of plywood, and a stool made of chopsticks and steamer trays.

Core77 tells us about a hand-woven aluminum chair.

Re-nest is highlighting chairs made from recycled whiskey barrels.

Scrap Lab is a group of designers based out of Bangkok’s Kasetsart University’s Architecture program that creates fun and innovative furniture out discarded industrial scraps. The group makes an eclectic variety of furniture, from a funky shaggy lamp to a lounge chair with a quilt-block pattern — all masterfully re-purposing materials that were once considered waste. While their list of materials includes traditional materials such as wood and metal, it also includes less traditional items such as foam and rope. The purpose of the group’s work is to not only create physical products, but also to collect research on how discarded materials can be used effectively to design functional and aesthetically pleasing pieces.

We’re impressed with this ‘grade A’ upcycling of egg carton pulp into multifaceted children’s play funiture. The Tamago (Japanese for ‘egg’) furniture series by Latvian design team, Merci Design consists of seven soft-contour furniture forms which may be easily manuvered to create letter and number patterns for playtime learning and fun. Tots will enjoy wielding their crayons or markers and drawing directly onto the blank canvas of Tamago furniture, leaving their mark without consequence… much like Merci Design made their mark with this recycled collection, while leaving no environmental impact.

Designed by Mario Bellini for Meritalia, an Italian furniture maker, the Via Lattea furniture line looks like a collection of homemade marshmallows. Light as air, these chairs and couches are made from steel mesh combined with recycled fiber sacks formerly used to transport grain, stones, and sugar. Bellini and Meritalia showed their new line this year at the Milan Furniture Fair and we’re fascinated by the glowing chairs and air-filled sacs.

Lots of up-and-coming and established designers will present new collections at BKLYN Designs this weekend, and we don’t want to miss a single, solitary piece of work—which is why we love getting an advanced look at what’s to come! Bill Higendorf, co-founder of Brooklyn–based furniture company Uhuru Design, sent us a sneak peak of the three new locally and sustainably produced designs he and partner Jason Horvath are debuting at BKLYN Designs this week. While they’re every bit as functional as Uhuru’s previous products, the limited edition Stitched Table, Standard Chair and Metal Stoolen have a little added oomph that sets them apart.

While perusing Graypants‘ catalog of eco-friendly furnishings we were particularly impressed by the lovely lines of this Slice chair. The cantilever chaise has a layered wood structure that allows an ottoman to slide out from beneath its seat. It’s an elegant design that achieves a versatile form factor via the efficient use of materials.

Recently we introduced you to Seattle’s Graypants Inc. and their beautiful line of sustainable Scrap Chairs. In the process of fine-tuning their creations, Seth and Jonathan were captivated by the interplay of light and shadows across the corrugations of their cardboard chair and decided to recast its surplus material as a series of stunning Scrap Lights. We love the way these luminous lanterns cast rippling rivulets of light through their corrugated seams, and their twice-recycled construction strikes us as a shining example of sustainable design at its finest.
