MDC Interiors created this uber-cool Glow Table from recycled pallet wood, concrete, glass, pine, and steel. The concrete combined with a narrow pallet strip provides an industrial feel along with a warm and earthy presence, and the natural opening in the pallet wood creates a perfect place to hold your favorite drink. A set of accent lights under the glass illuminate the beverages atop, and a dimmer switch is attached to change the light setting.

With a bevy of hidden compartments that you can stash your stuff in, the Kai table is an urban apartment dweller’s dream. Built by Naoki Hirakoso and Takamitsu Kitahara, the coffee table is made of wood and has a deceptively smooth surface that those in the know can nudge, lift or slide to access the treasures (or mundane items) stored within.

This watery blue chair by Pawel Grunert is as refreshing as the liquid that was once contained in the plastic bottles it’s made from. Called the SIE43 Chair, the piece was constructed for the ‘Eco Trans Pop’ exhibition at the Colombari Gallery in Milan, Italy. Grunert created a stainless steel frame to which he affixed dozens of PET bottles to create the cascade of blue. Though the seat doesn’t look like the most comfortable one we’ve seen, it’s an attractive piece of eco art that calls attention to the versatility of recycled materials.

I have been enamored with environmentally conscious furniture company Scrapile ever since I came across their line of recycled wood furniture during New York Design week years ago. Brooklyn-based designers Carlos Salgado and Bart Bettencourt have created a beautiful, cutting-edge line of furniture by collecting wood scraps from various lumber mills and recycling those scraps (which would otherwise be headed for landfill) into their stunning minimalist pieces. At this point, the Scrapile line includes tables, benches, stool, shelving, crates and lamps, all made out of their signature striated material. I had a chance to sit down with the up-and-coming design duo at their shop in Williamsburg to learn how it all began.

Today Groopti expanded their fun cardboard furniture series with their brand new Urban Tree coat hanger. The design was conceived by Gerardo Belmonte and then selected for production using Groopti’s method of crowdsourcing opinions from design enthusiasts. The Urban Tree is composed of 6 legs and 5 rings that are machine cut from 90% recycled corrugated cardboard. Each piece is cut from layers of corrugated board to ensure that the coat stand is extremely sturdy, and the legs and rings can be easily assembled without screws, nails, or adhesives.

Providing ample seating while entertaining guests can be a challenge – especially if you live in a small space and don’t have room for lots of chairs. To solve this problem, Dutch designer Rianne Koens developed her Oturakast series of modular stools, which can be stacked up to form a cabinet when they’re not in use. Each wooden unit features moveable legs that can be unfolded into a seat or folded up for stacking to create a custom modular cabinet. This simple yet beautiful design is a stroke of space-saving brilliance that makes the most of any tiny apartment.

Stuart Chase has launched a beautiful line of Modern Organic Furniture that is handcrafted in his private wood shop in Vermont. This unique furniture is created with materials that come from a collection of woods retrieved from all over the world and the Lake Champlain Valley in Vermont. Reclaimed tree roots and decayed or deceased trees make up the organic elements of his woodwork. The rarity and inconsistency of these multi-dimensional pieces makes organizing and blending the pieces with modern forms a remarkable challenge. The base structures for the modern and linear portions of the pieces are made up of solid wenge, zebrawood, ebony, acrylic and aluminum. All finishes are oil-based for maximum durability, and colored acrylic accents are used at times to fill voids and add sparkle to the pieces. Carving introduces an additional element that provides an area of transition between the modern and organic materials.

STICK is an eco-friendly wall covering product designed by Birmingham City University postgraduate Jiaqi Zhou. The wall ornament is made from recycled paper, and it can be used to display light items. STICK won the BCU MA Product Design 2011 Best Overall Project award, which was presented during a private exhibition showing at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design.

Tourism Malaysia in Paris has decided to sharpen their eco edge by appointing Bizarreka Design to transform their entire ground floor office into a mini-escape. The new interior environment captivates patrons’ attention by asserting Malaysia as the foremost eco-tourism destination in the world. Two concepts were developed and deployed by Bizarreka Design: nature and heritage. Movable and fixed furniture join together with reused wooden structure and elements, earth-toned tiles, arboreal walls, and layered stone underneath efficient in-wall shelving to reflect the natural splendor of the Malaysian rainforests. Other features such as tan and ecru stones on the wall, and earth tone sofas and rugs all allude to the serene landscapes of the Malaysian beaches and islands.

Brighton-based Claire Potter Design recently completed work on this beautiful blue DOVER cabinet, which is made from three separate desks and cabinets which were purchased in a true second-hand state from a local charity shop. The desks were trimmed, adjusted, and combined by the studio to create a single, four-meter-long cabinet. Long bar handles and 100% recycled paint from Newlife paints unify the cabinet, which was also wrapped in locally reclaimed, scrubbed scaffold boards to create a soft yet utilitarian styled piece of furniture. The DOVER cabinet has proved very popular – so much so that the studio is now offering a similar ‘rescue and reinvent’ service for clients’ otherwise overlooked furniture.
