Assembly New York’s Minimalist Womenswear Takes its Cues from Menswear

Assembly New York debuted its minimalist new womenswear collection in an understated venue in the Lower East Side at New York Fashion Week. The Fall/Winter 2012 collection, designed Greg Armas and Claire Lampert, features simple, androgynous looks with a mix of high-waisted pants, floor-length trench coats, and simply-cut sweaters. And best of all, all of the clothes are produced right here in New York, an Assembly New York sales and projects associate tells Ecouterre.

The Widow Gown, which is made up of black Napa leather and more than 100,000 needles, is on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum’s “Power of Making” exhibit in London. Spanish Retailer Zara Accused of Using Brazilian “Slave Labor”

High fashion for low prices? There has to be a catch — and it appears that there is. Spanish retailer Zara, once described by Louis Vuitton’s fashion director as “possibly the most innovative and devastating retailers in the world,” has been accused of using slave labor to produce its wares in more than 30 outsourced Brazilian manufacturing plants, according to Forbes. Zara has responded to the accusations, saying that the company will strengthen its supervision of factories, and that it has asked factories responsible for illegal outsourcing to comply with company standards. Silkworms Munch Mulberries & Dye to Produce Naturally Flourescent Silk

Current water-intensive practices for dyeing silk involve harsh toxic chemicals that can poison workers and the environment, but a group of scientists have created a method that could eliminate the dyeing process all together. Researchers from the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) in Singapore found that by feeding silkworms a diet of mulberry leaves mixed with dye, the little buggers produce naturally colored silk. Not only is the method eco-friendly, but it drastically reduces the amount of water needed.

Our Recycled Denim Challenge has given way to some beautiful designs. Handmade by Terry Dewal, this incredible woven rug gives new meaning to the term “from rags to riches.” Taking his old, beat-up blue jeans and cutting them into narrow strips, Terry managed to craft an attractive and versatile rug on his floor loom. Long wearing and machine-washable, even when subjected to all the wear and tear of daily foot traffic, his design – like your favorite pair of jeans – will just get better with age!

New York Fashion Week is in full swing and we’re definitely finding it tough to not get swept up in all of the excitement! Just a few days in, this year’s Green Shows have debuted some seriously stunning designs, proving that eco-fashion has moved from colorless casual wear to full-on haute couture. We were impressed by John Patrick for Organic’s aqua-inspired line, Luis Valenzuela’s brilliant pieces made from reclaimed trash, and we’ve even got some exclusive coverage from Edun, the ethical fashion label formed by U2′s Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson. But don’t think it’s been all work and no play — we’ve also been hosting a fun and fabulous media lounge at the Metropolitan Suite, an elegant 8,500 square feet loft-like space that has been retrofitted with eco-friendly flooring, LED lighting, and employs a stringent waste and recycling program!
