President Obama won the 2012 US election last night, and in a powerful victory speech he called for climate action to address a nation that is “threatened by the destructive power of a warming planet“. The statement came after a long campaign that barely mentioned the environment, so now we look to our Commander in Chief to see what he will do in the face of a rapidly changing climate. With a Republican-controlled House of Representatives filled with many who are skeptical of climate science, what will four more years mean for the regulation of greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, and the growth of our economy? Read on for a look at critical opportunities for the Obama Administration to combat climate change in the years to come.

Remember that patronizing remark Presidential candidate Mitt Romney made about climate change and rising ocean levels? It was at the 2012 Republican National Convention, where Romney probably felt confident that his climate denying jokes would fall on friendly ears. Here’s what he said: “President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family.” How the attendees of the RNC slapped their knees in laughter at that one! Fast-forward a few months and the devastation of Hurricane Sandy has silenced the glee.

When it comes to climate change, everyone knows that the US is a deeply divided country — particularly with respect to the science behind the theory. Despite evidence from multiple independent, government and scientific groups, there are still many that don’t believe that climate change exists. As such, for the Republican Party, the subject has been the butt of several jokes, with Mitt Romney even cracking one at the RNC last month to much laughter. However, even President Obama, who was once so idealistic with his environmental pledges, has toned down the rhetoric. Could it be that despite one of the hottest summers on record, droughts, wildfires and rising food prices, no-one really wants to talk about climate change?
