With scores of new smartphones and tablets release every quarter, tons of electronic devices are thrown away – and they often wind up filling our landfills and polluting the environment. Electronic waste is a growing concern – over 2.4 million tons of waste was generated by gadgets in 2010 alone. This waste often includes toxic materials such as lead, mercury and lithium to name a few. The Unites States generates more electronic waste than any other nation on earth.  According to the EPA, more than 4.6 million tons entered domestic landfills in 2000, and 50-80% of our total e-waste is exported to developing nations where defunct electronics wind up in dumps, polluting the environment, and littering neighborhoods. That’s why 22-year-old engineering graduate Rachel Field has invented the Bicyclean – a pedal-powered grinder and e-waste separation system.  Small-scale, affordable, and socially responsible, the Bicylean is a current contender for the James Dyson Award.

Spotted by our friends at Treehugger, this epic Pegasus Sculpture, crafted by London’s Machine Shop from 3,500 Huawei smartphones stands nearly 19 feet tall and boasts a 16 foot wingspan. The mass of Ascend D Quad handsets rest on a frame made from over 650 yards of iron rods, and the whole piece took more than 720 man-hours to craft.
