Today marks the date of the National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in Washington, DC – and we’re looking forward to a stunning unveil complete with sparkling strings of energy-efficient LED lights. Thousands of people will gather at the Ellipse in President’s Park at 4pm EST to watch GE Lighting and the National Park Foundation unveil months of hard work. Although the exact design is being kept under wraps, when the switch is flicked, thousands of GE Color Effects® programmable, color-changing GE LED lights will illuminate the tree’s branches.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) just awarded Philips Lighting America the Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize along with a cool $10 million for the development of their new energy efficient LED light bulb that uses just 9.7 watts of electricity. The award – a.k.a. the “L Prize” – challenged manufacturers to create a 60-watt light bulb equivalent that could keep up with the demands of real-world consumers. Philips’ new bulb incarnation seems to have stood up to the DOE’s standards over 18 months of testing its performance, quality, lifetime and cost. If everyone in the US were to switch to this bulb we’d save a collective 20 million metric tons of carbon emissions, 35 terrawatt-hours of electricity and $3.9 billion each year.

Meinhardt’s “Hopscotch” installation, showcased at the Vivid Sydney light and music festival, had visitors hopping up and down to create their own LED light rainbows. The low-energy light installation was one of more than 40 projects by local and international artists that encouraged interaction from visitors.

Well that certainly was a short lived victory. Just last Wednesday, we were celebrating the House of Representative’s rejection of the BULB Act, a bill that would put a stop to the light bulb efficiency standards signed into law by George W. Bush. But then just three days later, the House passed an amendment to that bill that prohibits spending to enforce the efficiency standards, essentially stopping them altogether. Many, including us, are completely baffled as to why the Republicans would want to stop a bill that will save Americans billions of dollars, but now it’s clear that they are doing this simply to play to their Tea Party supporters.

Since the idea was first put forth last fall, we have been closely following the quest of U.S. Republicans to repeal the energy efficiency standards for light bulbs. Introduced by Representative Joe Barton (R-Texas), the Better Use of Light Bulb (BULB) Act (HR 6144) would block parts of the 2007 energy law signed by George W. Bush that calls for phasing out the inefficient incandescent light bulb. In turn, the BULB Act would cost consumers more than $12.5 billion in energy costs annually. The bill is set to be voted on by the House of Representatives today.

Inspired by cityscapes, this customizable light by Yasser Jamani allows individuals to get a taste of urban planning by letting them choose the shape of their own skyline. Using a perforated aluminum grid-like format, the lamp enables one to cut out the exact shape they’d like to let light shine through, creating an individualistic approach to energy-efficient lighting. LED strips which consume only 6-watts of power are surrounded by a reflective foil that enables light to bounce, dispersing it further and creating a unique visual effect.
