There is a certain etheral winding line that often surfaces in artist Andy Goldsworthy‘s work – If you’ve ever seen the documentary “Rivers and Tides,” visited the de Young Museum in San Francisco, or watched a snake move through the grass, you know the line. Last year this familiar form surfaced again in San Francisco as Goldsworthy created “Wood Line” – a winding trail of fallen Eucalyptus trees that gracefully curves through the forests of the Presidio.

In a treebute, er tribute, to the natural beauty of their city, two artists from Yogyakarta, Indonesia outfitted scooter riders with safety helmets planted with trees and had them ride around the city en-masse. Passers-by were stunned as they saw trees gliding along on the tops of the cars before the scooter riders were revealed in all their tree-loving glory. The stunt is called Treebute to Yogya and was designed and carried out by Sara Nuytemans & Arya Pandjalu. Video of the tree ride after the jump.

The Vitruvian Man is typically used as a symbol of the human relationship to geometry, to proportion, and to civilization. So Greenpeace decided to enlist artist John Quigley to install this massive symbol in the artic — about 500 miles from the North Pole. Depicted as fading away into the advancing tide, the Melting Vitruvian Man is meant to draw attention to dwindling sea ice – this year Arctic ice retreated to the third smallest area on record.

Commissioned for Bloomberg Philanthropy by art and design agency Arts Co, ‘Waste Not, Want It’ is a series of specially commissioned art and design projects made almost entirely out of Bloomberg’s waste and presented as part of the 2011 London Design Festival. Design studio Loop.pH’s ‘Faraday Curtain’ is made from hundreds of meters of discarded electrical cable, stripped of its inner core and conductive shielding and re-threaded into an intricately laced textile mesh. The resultant ephemeral textile enclosure has a soft and sheer surface that shields the interior space from electromagnetic fields.

But more changed: the organization of the event, the layout of it, the expectation. For COP15 we talked to Ian Garrett of the Center for Sustainable Practice in the Arts to get his perspective on the arts and culture surrounding the talks.
