Instead of kicking your Christmas tree to the curb, bring it with you this weekend to your local park or community garden for Mulchfest 2011 to turn it into mulch for city trees.  The event is part of GreeNYC, the mayor’s initiative to reduce the New York City’s carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030.

This past weekend the Outside Lands festival rocked San Francisco, drawing thousands of people to bask in the sunshine and music that filled Golden Gate Park. How does urban space become a public place? How does design impact a space’s civic liveliness? On Monday, July 13, 2009, from 10 am to 1 pm, Diana Balmori and her NYC-based landscape and urban design firm Balmori Associates, will be unpacking these questions and other issues that surround place-making. 40 landscape architecture and architecture students will join Diana Balmori and Balmori Associates on Monday in the Meatpacking District to use the area as a case study to frame their discussion about public places. The conversation will stream online via tinychat and Twitter as Diana Balmori moderates along with Dutch landscape architect Erik de Jong. Balmori Associates is inviting everyone to share their insights on public places — so share yours today and see what others have to say on July 13!

In the midst of the current global economic crisis, many businesses stand to lose sight of sustainability goals as they focus upon the meeting the bottom line and keeping their staff in employment. However there has never been a more critical time for environmental policy, and the Guardian Climate Change Summit 2009 is a rallying call for businesses to move from environmental awareness to action in these tough economic times. Taking place in on June 15th at London’s Hotel Russell, the conference aims to inspire more businesses to prioritize the environment by showing that meeting the bottom line financially and keeping climate change high on the agenda are far from incompatible.

With an expected audience of over 2 billion people, the organizers of the event hope that this 24 hour worldwide concert will raise awareness on the issue of global warming and get people to take action in solving the climate crisis. Artists performing at the event range from Madonna and James Blunt at the London Event to Dave Matthews and the recently reunited The Police in the United States, and many many more! Sydney started it, with massive success, and now London is getting into the act. The Lights Out London campaign is inviting londoners to turn off their lights for one hour, between 9p.m. and 10p.m. on the 21st of June (the Summer Solstice). They are hoping to become the largest climate change event ever recorded whose only request is to switch off.
