Modern skyscrapers are typically made from concrete and steel, but as architect Michael Charters suggests, wood could be a viable construction material for tall buildings that would have a lower environmental impact. Charters recently designed ‘Big Wood,’ a prototype for a large-scale skyscraper made from wood for the 2013 eVolo Skyscraper Competition. The sprawling mixed-use complex would serve as a sustainable alternative to standard building materials, which are expensive and require a great deal of energy to produce.

Due to our addiction to plastics, the human race has created the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a massive accumulation of trash dominated by synthetic, non-biodegradable objects. Turning a blight into an advantage, architects Park Sung-Hee and Na Hye Yeon from South Korea have designed the 7th Continent: Kinetic Islands which are structures that use rubbish as construction elements for a floating city.

In Monument to Civilization, Lin Yu-Ta proposes a dark, staggering architectural solution to the massive problem of urban waste. With space for toxin-emitting landfill in decline, Lin suggests that we might instead construct epic towers from that waste, and from that decomposing trash generate power for the world’s largest cities. The towers would be massive - New York alone, Lin tells us, sends 2,372,000 tons of trash to landfills each year. That’s enough to construct a tower 1,318 meters high each year. This ingenious, sobering proposal for sustainable energy was recently awarded third place in the eVolo’s 2012 Skyscraper Competition.

Named for the Hindi for the word “sky,” this dynamic Aakash skyscraper concept is an incredible tree-like structure that branches out above the city of Mumbai. Designed by British team Lemire Abdul Halim Chehab, Suraj Ramkumar Suthar, and Swapnil Sanjay Gawande, the futuristic scraper is a unique and sustainable answer to the pollution and overcrowding of India’s largest metropolis, supplying it with solar power collected by its lofty canopy. The high-flying concept was recently recognized with an honorable mention in the eVolo Skyscraper competition.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch was the inspiration for the Plastic Fish Tower, an orb-like underwater skyscraper that recently caught our eye as an honorable mention in eVolo’s 2012 skyscraper competition. The spherical structure was designed by the South Korean team of Kim Hongseop, Cho Hyunbeom, Yoom Sunhee and Yoom Hyungsoo, and it’s more than just a cool-looking futuristic building – it’s designed to suck in plastic from the massive pacific garbage patch and reprocess it, helping to slowly clear the debris which currently spans a whopping 8.1% of the sea.

Another day, another vertical farm concept, except this one is set out on the water to avoid taking up valuable land. This food-producing eco skyscraper by Australian architect Ruwan Fernando was one of the entries for the eVolo Skyscraper competition and has a number of direct advantages over a land based farm including access to water, minerals, more sunlight, and wind and waves to generate renewable energy. Sure we have a long ways to go before vertical farms become reality, but Fernando might be onto something.
