Heads up San Francisco Bay Area architecture fans – AIA SF’s 2013 Marin Living:Home Tours is back again! For the past three years, the owners of some of Marin County’s most impressive homes have opened their doors, allowing the public to look at their private spaces. And once again, AIA San Francisco and the Center for Architecture + Design are gearing up to host the Marin Living: Home Tours event, which will take place on TOMORROW (May 18th) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s program includes a houseboat in Sausalito, a LEED Gold-certified communal living facility in San Rafael, and Koji Tsutsui & Associates’ gorgeous Multicellular House in Mill Valley (pictured at top). San Francisco-based Feldman Architecture creates beautiful and sustainable modern homes using a palette of durable materials like concrete, stone, natural wood, and powder-coated steel. One of the current projects in the firm’s resume of homes is the Walnut Farms Retreat located in the Central Valley of California near the San Andres Fault. Like many of its predecessors, the Walnut Farms Retreat is slated to be certified by the USGBC’s LEED rating system, and as Feldman Architecture’s Principal, Jonathan Feldman, AIA, states, “the client was quick to jump into certification”. The 6649-square-foot project is designed to be carbon neutral with a net-zero solar electrical system, geothermal radiant heating and cooling, a solar hot water system, and rammed earth walls.

Built into the side of a hill, the House Ocho in Carmel, California is a sustainable house offering breathtaking views. Designed by Feldman Architecture, a lush green roof was built on the top with the assistance of Paul Kephart, who was the mastermind behind the green roofs of the California Academy of Sciences and the Vancouver Convention Center. Built within an area prone to seismic activity, the green roof also supports and protects the house.
