The past few weeks have seen a rapid unraveling of Fisker Automotive’s stability, as CEO Henrik Fisker announced his resignation, bankruptcy rumors swirled and the company laid off 75 percent of its work force. And now, as GigaOM reports, lawsuits against Fisker are starting to pile up, lending further credence to suggestions that the company will soon file for bankruptcy. Both Fisker’s landlords and the automaker’s web designer have filed claims totaling $700,000 in allegedly unpaid bills.

Several news organizations are reporting that the U.S. government-backed electric vehicle company Fisker Automotive is seeking counsel from a law firm that specializes in bankruptcy proceedings. The company produces luxury electric vehicles popular with celebrities such as Leonardo Di Caprio and Justin Bieber, and it received a $529 million loan from the Department of Energy. But ABC News draws comparisons between Fisker and solar manufacturer Solyndra (which famously filed for bankruptcy in 2011), claiming that while the firm has paid off its loan interest payments, it will struggle to meet a major principle payment due at the end of April.

Here’s a bit of surprising news: Fisker Automotive‘s founding partner and executive chairman Henrik Fisker has resigned. Fisker Automotive has confirmed his resignation, but with very little details as to why. According to an email from Henrik Fisker announcing his resignation, he left the company that he helped create because of “several major disagreements . . . with the Fisker Automotive executive management on the business strategy.”

Fisker Automotive‘s Karma EV just set two new world records at a recent event at the Floriade Horticultural World Expo in Venlo, Netherlands. Fisker now holds the the world record for the highest number of single-brand electric vehicles to be charged simultaneously and the highest number of mixed-brand electric vehicles to be charged simultaneously.

Last Friday a Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid caught fire in Woodside, California. Thankfully there were no passengers in the Karma at the time that flames erupted from the driver’s side front corner of the parked car. Friday’s fire follows a similar incident where a Fisker Karma caught fire in a garage in Texas. Fisker released a brief statement to say that they are hiring an independent expert to examine the cause of the latest incident.

Fisker Automotive has just announced that Co-Founder Henrik Fisker will become Executive Chairman of the company, and Tom LaSorda has been appointed CEO and Vice Chairman of the Board. LaSorda was a former CEO, President and Vice Chairman of the Chrysler Group and also held a number of executive positions at General Motors over a 23 year career. Most recently, LaSorda joined Fisker as Vice Chairman of the Board and executive advisor to the management team in December. He will now assume full CEO responsibilities and day-to-day operational management.

Two weeks ago, Fisker Automotive and their battery supplier A123 announced to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the lithium ion batteries used in their Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid electric models were faulty. Just last night the Fisker team announced they’d already contacted all Karma owners and have almost completed replacing the battery packs free of charge – and those that hadn’t been replaced had appointments booked for the fix. Fisker’s speedy handling of this potentially disastrous situation is just another example of their well-oiled design practice and the dedication their founder has to making the Karma the best plug-in vehicle on the market.

Fisker Automotive, the maker of the Fisker Karma luxury plug-in electric hybrid vehicle has officially announced a recall of all 239 Karmas in the world in order to fix a defect recently revealed by their battery manufacturer, A123 Systems. The flaw, a series of misaligned hose clamps that could cause a coolant leak and resulting electrical shortage, was announced by A123 late last week and according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website where the recall is posted, the report by Fisker was filed on the 21st of this month with the recall beginning in January 2012.

A123, the battery manufacturer that supplies power packs to Fisker Automotive, has admitted that some batteries installed in the Karma may malfunction due to misaligned hose clamps. The hose clamps could lead to a coolant leak, which in turn could cause an electrical shortage in the vehicle. A123 says that fewer than 50 Karmas were affected by the defect, and they’ve already begun fixing the issue.
