“Minimum resource usage – maximum function” is the idea behind OYD Design’s FS Chair. The DIY-inspired chair is cut from a single birch plywood panel (108 x 95 cm) and can be easily assembled without the need for screws, metal parts or glue. The flat-pack design allows it to easily be shipped to its new owner, minimizing transport costs and reducing the chair’s carbon footprint.

At this year’s Milan Design Week Tom Dixon joined forces with Digital Forming Studio to create a “Co-Design Bar” where visitors could customize and digitally print their own lamps! The exhibit emphasized the manufacturing process as much as the end product and invited visitors to use 3D computer programming applications to create one-off lighting designs. The designs will be transformed into flat-pack lamps, and within just a couple of weeks they’ll be shipped off to their new homes.

Designer Karin Ekwall created the clever Åsta stool, a portable seat that mixes the traditional Scandinavian furniture and history of joinery into a nostalgic and aesthetic piece of carpentry. The stool is made entirely of wood — absolutely no screws or nails are needed to put it together. Inspired by the old workshop clamps, the stool is held together through a joining method where small handles lock the legs in place. The seat can easily be flat packed for shipping or to tote with you wherever you go. Ekwall plans to use the joining method to create an entire series of furniture.

Dutch designer Floris Hovers created his surprisingly simple ‘Wrapped’ stools out of a few pieces of wood with biodegradable rope wrapped around them. The word ‘Wrapped’ is a translation of the Dutch word ‘Ingewikkeld‘, which means both ‘wrapped’ and ‘complicated’ in one single word – a nod to Hovers’ fixing technique.

IKEA is marketing its big annual sale with a line of clever furniture pieces made entirely out of the company’s very own flat pack furniture packaging. IKEA commissioned advertising agency AUGE Headquarter in Italy to make a big splash for their 40% sale, and that’s exactly what they’ve done by designing a table, a chair, and a table lamp – all made out of cardboard.

Respecting Michelle Thonet‘s original idea of furniture that could easily be disassembled for optimizing space during transportation, Dutch studio Nuy of NOORT created this angular chair made from recycled honeycomb cardboard. Specially designed for Thonet label EXP, the ‘VouwWow VWo1′ chair was introduced to the market in 2010 and is sells for less than €100. Light, affordable and recycled, this sustainable seat packs flat to ship and can be set up in a snap without any tools, glue or screws.

Rainer & Tobias Kyburz‘s KARTONKLUNKER is a clever cardboard chandelier that packs flat to ship and can be set up in a snap without the use of screws or glue. Spotted over at SwissMiss, the fixture features the ornamental silhouette of a classic chandelier in a pared-down design that saves on shipping weight and material use. The lamp comes complete with wiring and six bulb sockets and is easy to assemble and hang, making it an easy way to add a bit of tongue-in-cheek class to any interior.

Gypsy Modular is a new line of furniture made from modular components so it can be configured and then reconfigured based on your needs. Connectors built directly into the parts hold together with friction and pressure, so there is no need for tools or hardware. The components are made from MDF (while we usually shun medium density fiberboard, Gypsy does point out that most MDF is made from recycled pre-consumer content and is significantly stronger than other particle boards) or Baltic Birch Ply and can be assembled in seconds, so it’s great for kids as well as students and those on the move.

Then check out ByProducts’ eco-conscious, clever, and compact tables and stools, which are made from discarded wood cutoffs. Constructed from baltic birch, each chair and table capitalizes on the shapes of the offcuts that they were sourced from. The simplified process also removes the need for additional machining, and the joining system allows for each piece to be quickly assembled, disassembled and flat packed away. UK-based designers Eujin Pei and Yingying Seow aim to extend their range of ByProducts by working with other manufacturers who use different materials for their future pieces.

Australian architect Toby Horrocks designed this set of flat-pack cardboard furniture to explore ways that urban and rural spaces can meet in a piece of furniture. The log book shelf takes the theme literally: the form is a fallen tree trunk fused with a cityscape. Composed of over 300 digitally cut pieces assembled without glue, the structurally-sound seat and bookshelf is also made from recycled sources and is 100% recyclable.
