A functional flatpack shelving system set to unfold at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair, this recyclable design by the Parisian duo of NOCC is a practical DIY storage unit that can be built in a variety of ways, adapting to individual space and functional needs. Dubbed ‘Element’ the entire piece actually consists of a simple 1mm sheet of aluminum that has been laser-cut to be folded and assembled with ease to fit perfectly with your existing decor.

Australian architect Toby Horrocks designed this set of flat-pack cardboard furniture to explore ways that urban and rural spaces can meet in a piece of furniture. The log book shelf takes the theme literally: the form is a fallen tree trunk fused with a cityscape. Composed of over 300 digitally cut pieces assembled without glue, the structurally-sound seat and bookshelf is also made from recycled sources and is 100% recyclable.

Over at TreeHugger we are saps for furniture that can slide under your door; flatpack isn’t just made by IKEA. Designers like Eric Ku are doing it with humor, inventing a flatpack alphabet – his Flatpack Chair is pretty self-explanatory. We found many innovative designs at ICFF last weekend, but we were particularly impressed with the concept behind this beautiful table from MIO. Its streamlined form uses a waste reducing pattern that can be cut with little leftover material, and packed flat for efficient shipping. Dubbed the Origami table, the design was inspired by its namesake art form. Through an exploration of folding materials, MIO has created a functional and efficient eco-friendly structure that is self-locking and hardware free.
