Despite a challenging football season, the Philadelphia Eagles are clearly winning in the alternative energy game. The team recently called upon New York-based Urban Green Energy (UGE) to install fourteen micro wind turbines at Lincoln Financial Field. The turbines are located in two sets of seven at opposing ends of the field and connected to the stadium’s grid, reducing energy consumption during the day, and putting power back into the grid at night. Thanks to the stadium’s existing and future solar power arrays, the Eagles’ home field will now generate more alternative power than any stadium in the NFL.

This verdant soccer training facility in France shows its love for all things turf by expanding its pitch right onto its roof! The Centre de Formation de Football in Amiens consists of a facility and office space to support the athletes right alongside a field where the team practices. Designed by Chartier – Corbasson and finished in 2009, the facility is sure to inspire its athletes and maybe even provide for some interesting drills while playing on the roof.

With global soccer fever still high, here’s another amazing soccer stadium that boasts some remarkable green features. The recently completed Empire Field Stadium in Vancouver is made with 22,000 recycled tires, amounting to 346,000 pounds of crumb rubber! The stadium, which will host the BC Lions football team (American football) and the Vancouver Whitecaps Soccer team, utilizes the crumb rubber under the artificial turf, which provides a number of benefits for the players and the environment.

Believe it or not, countries are already bidding to host the World Cup as far out as 2022, and Qatar has submitted their bid, which includes a slew of solar powered stadiums as well as significant upgrades to their public transportation network. Eleven countries submitted bids for the 21st and 22nd World Cup, and the Qatar bid, which we saw over at Designboom this morning, is the first ever from a Middle Eastern country. If they win the bid, Qatar would build three brand new green stadiums and update two existing ones in order to host the games.

ATTENTION GREEN SOCCER FANS

Nike recently unveiled its new team jerseys for the upcoming World Cup and here’s the kicker (pun intended) – they’re made from discarded plastic bottles! That’s right, the uniforms, or “kits” in proper soccer speak, are made from melted down bottles from landfills in Japan and Taiwan that have been spun into fabric.
