Pardon the potty talk, but wouldn’t it be great if every time you flushed the toilet you were actually generating heat for your home? That’s exactly what a Los Angeles-based startup is hoping to accomplish. OriginOil, a company that specializes in converting algae into fuel, is working on developing a pilot for an urban algae farm concept that would use wastewater to help grow algae, which is then used to generate energy, treating the wastewater in the process.

Inca Architectes designed this dome-shaped eco-tourism center that feels like a cozy living room in the woods. Commissioned by the Department Tourism Committee of Seine et Marne to protect the Gorges de Franchard biosphere reserve in Fontainebleau, the center is the first of its kind in France and it’s made of natural materials in order to keep its long-term environmental impact to an absolute minimum.

Learning from the issues that arose in the aftermath of the Fukushima blast in Japan over one year ago, students at the Architecture School of Bordeaux have developed the Fukushima Emergency Project — a pop-up shelter designed for disaster relief. The students wanted to create a design that could be replicated in any country and work in tandem with other relief efforts. The structure is constructed with cardboard tubes and pallets that are typically used to deliver emergency goods, and each shelter measures a reasonably comfortable 12,5 square meters (about the size of an average car space). The shelter can also be covered to protect against the elements or to add privacy.

World-renowned fashion photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton shot this incredible film of a ghostly snowboarder wrapped in glowing low-energy LED lights swooshing through snow and trees at night. Sutton told Nowness that he always dreamed about an illuminated figure breezing through the dark alone, so he commissioned John Spatcher to design this incredible suit wrapped in LED lights, which pro snowboarder William Hughes donned before hitting the Tignes slopes in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France.
