Seattle’s Bertschi Elementary School was just certified as the world’s fourth Living Building. The elementary school, situated in the heart of Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, is a 3,380-square-foot interactive learning environment filled with numerous green features – including composting toilets, solar panels and a slew of other additions that allowed it to meet the rigorous standards of the Living Building Challenge 2.0.

Rotunda Living, a new small house builder in the UK, has developed a range of small, contemporary roundhouses that would be perfect for a holiday getaway or a backyard studio. The structures are similar to yurts, but with solid walls. Founder Gemma Roe plans to use locally-sourced materials and support a UK supply chain without compromising on quality and beauty. ”I just don’t think there are enough Roundhouses around nowadays,” says Roe. ”The rectilinear world is frustratingly dull and I just want to provide people with the opportunity to step into another environment for once to experience something a little magical.”

Grow Anthology crafts these flexible, waterproof and eco-friendly longboards from recycled paper. With designs that reference nature and that are inspired by the lines of vintage surfboards, each skateboard is manufactured in the US. Not only does the company utilize recycled materials in their boards—which are FSC certified by the Rainforest Alliance—but Grow Anthology also promises to plant a tree for each longboard sold.

It’s been some time since we last reported on Mexico City-based Godoylab, but this sustainability-focused design studio has certainly been hard at work with a slew of new pieces to show. One piece that caught our eye is Emiliano Godoy’s Drip Table, a dynamic form built of thinning wood taken from a sustainably managed and FSC-certified teak plantation. Through smart design Godoy was able to create fluid and unique form that maximizes the value of this difficult and somewhat diminutive material while boasting the advantage of being eco-friendly.

We all know it: Green is the new black. One of the many manifestations of the environmentalist trend/movement is that labels and certifications designed for the environmentally-conscious consumer have been proliferating like mad. Even if you’re savvy enough to know about LEED and FSC, there are dozens of lesser-known eco-labels. It’s hard to derive information from a label you’ve never seen before, but you may be able to figure out which category of label you’re looking at – government, proprietary, or independent agency. I’m taking this week’s Is It Green to blitz through some of these and give a little context to those logos.

One of our favorite finds at this year’s West Coast Green were these other-wordly and eco-friendly dome homes from Solaleya. Imagine a circular loft with plenty of skylights and a solar array on top, gently rotating to orient itself towards the sun, and you have the basic idea. It’s like an eco-friendly update to the Chemosphere in LA. The durable domes are constructed using only FSC-certified wood and have been proven to withstand category 5 hurricanes and earthquakes up to magnitude 8 on the MSK scale.

This is why our gaze fell so admirably on the line of housewares from Domestic Aesthetic while making our way through the ICFF this past week. Domestic Aesthetic’s motto “live well, live right” extends beyond their product line into the surrounding community, with social responsibility high on their list of priorities. With a beautiful line of handcrafted pieces, this truly green-minded company is out to make eco-friendly easier for both buyers and manufacturers, and we have to admit that the results are beautiful.

An avid user of reclaimed materials, Spencer now regularly reclaims oak staves from California wineries and transforms them into these stunning one-of-a-kind pieces for residential and commercial use. (p.s., you don’t have to be a wine aficionado to enjoy them).
