Earlier this month, the Innovative Mobility Automobile GmbH unveiled a tiny one-seat electric vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show called the Colibri. The car is so small that two of them can occupy a single parking space, making it an ideal option for dense urban areas. The Colibri has a battery range of about 69 miles, recharges in just two hours, and with its single person-capacity, the car may well be a good candidate for car-sharing programs.

Volvo is positioning itself at the head of the class when it comes to developing high-tech safety features that will protect not only car drivers, but also pedestrians and cyclists. The Swedish automaker recently unveiled external airbags meant to protect pedestrians, and the company is also developing accident-avoiding self-driving cars. At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the company unveiled a new collision avoidance system that automatically senses when cyclists and pedestrians are in a car’s path and brakes for them.

McLaren Automotive just released the performance specs for its P1 hybrid supercar, which is set to debut next week at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. With 903 horsepower on tap from its hybrid powertrain, the P1 supercar will blow you away – it’s capable of reaching 0-60 mph in under three seconds and has a top speed of 217 mph.

Swedish carmaker Volvo has unveiled the world’s first car with external airbags to ensure the safety of pedestrians and protect them from serious head and neck injuries. The airbag is located under the hood and inflates at the base of the windshield while enabling the driver to see ahead. The new Volvo V40 hatchback goes on sale in Australia today.

Volkswagen gave us a preview of its electric Golf with the Golf Blue-e-motion prototype, and the company recently announced that the vehicle is set to hit the streets late next year as a 2014 model. Jonathan Browning, president of VW of America, confirmed the company’s plans with Automotive News last week at the Geneva Motor Show. It’s expected that VW will release the all-electric Golf in specific markets before making it available nationwide. Nissan and GM used a similar method for the Leaf and Volt models.

Infiniti has just released photos of its upcoming plug-in hybrid sports car concept, to be released in March 2012 at the Geneva Motor Show. The company is promising a “highly advanced, range-extending electric sports car concept” that “extends the potential for high performance, low emission electric cars.” The best news? This new vehicle will be released in addition to the LEAF-based electric sedan that Infiniti will soon put on the market. The automaker calls it the natural next step to create a car with performance and green street cred.

Green speed demons may soon rejoice – in Europe, at least. Joining the ranks of the Tesla Roadster, Germany’s Artega SE is a new electric sports car which debuted at the recent Geneva Motor Show. The Artega SE (Sports Electric), modeled after its GT counterpart, can rev up to 155 miles per hour, or 375 horsepower, thanks to its twin electric motors and is poised to give the Tesla a run for its money.

After much talk, Toyota will debut its brand new Yaris HSD concept at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show this March, dedicating its entire stand at the show to the new hybrid technology. The Yaris will mark Toyota‘s initiative to bring full hybrid technology to the B segment – the biggest automotive volume segment in Europe. While no specific specifications were revealed for the hybrid version of the Yaris, the Japanese manufacturer did state that the gas-electric concept will sport hybrid-specific styling cues, that will let it stand apart from the conventional Yaris.

Renowned supercar designer Italdesign recently revealed the first images of the Namir, a vehicle that they claim will be the fastest hybrid car in the world. Set to be officially unveiled today at the Geneva Motor Show, the vehicle will boast 370hp, a scorching top speed of 187mph, and will be able to travel over 1,200 miles without a refill or a charge.
