Whether it is a fruity Napa merlot or an oaky and acidic Chablis chardonnay, any wine lover will tell you that each variety of grape and the region in which it is grown gives each wine a unique character. With global warming altering the world’s climate and weather patterns, enthusiasts may have to start reworking their palates. Climatologists at the French research institute INRA predict that global temperature will rise 1 to 2 degrees Celsius by mid-century, making extreme weather events more common and opening up new regions for viticulture. Under these conditions, existing winemakers across the globe will be unable to continue to create the exact same styles from their grapes as they have in the past.

Even during an economic and political crisis, Greece has reason to boast. The country installed an amazing 300 MW of solar PV in the month of January alone, a third more than was installed last year and greater than solar giant Germany at 275 MW. LAGIE, the operator of Greece’s electric grid, reported that 282 MW were from ground-mounted PV projects and 18MW came from rooftop arrays. The current solar PV capacity for Greece is 1.72 GW, and it is projected that their cumulative capacity will jump to 2.58 GW by the end of the year. So, just how did Greece accomplish this feat in a time of financial stress?

Chemical compounds known as phthalates are used as plasticizers and softeners in products ranging from vinyl to cosmetics. They’re suspected of being endocrine disrupters (substances that interfere with the way hormones work), and the CDC has cautioned against the widespread use of the chemicals until more research can be done. Lab testing has shown that pretty much every human has some level of phthalate contamination, and a new study shows that even the smallest creatures are exposed to the substance. A report in the Science of the Total Environment by entomologist Dr. Alain Lenoir has shown that all of the insects in his study were contaminated with the compound.

The first vertical garden built in Thessaloniki, Greece is located at the I-Bank store of the National Bank of Greece in the city center. This electronic banking facility offers self-service e-banking as well as space for relaxation and entertainment, and the vertical garden perfectly fits the modern architectural design and the high-tech surroundings. The vertical garden was installed by Vita Verde in August 2011, and after a year it still impresses visitors from all over the world. The plants in the living wall purify the interior air, minimize stress, and increase productivity of the employees. Clients enjoy relaxing while having a break in the coffee corner where the garden is situated, and the overall aesthetics of the space has been improved in a unique way.

Even those of us who aren’t so savvy about economics know that Greece is in big trouble – but the country’s very first eco-community, which is currently under construction, offers a green glimmer of hope. Situated on Mt. Telethrion, the Telaithrion community aims to provide a model for sustainability and healthy living that is harmonious with the earth and its residents that the whole nation can learn from. When complete, the project will include a host of sustainably built geodesic domes and yurts, as well as a forest garden, sheds, compost heaps, and much, much more. Set on an idyllic beach on Mykonos island in Greece, the Alemagou Bar and Restaurant was designed to sit in harmony with its natural site, rather than exist in discord. Designed by Studio-K, the seaside structure was built in the island’s typical Cycladic style, which is characterized by whitewashed, smooth-edged constructions. Local materials were employed throughout the building, and come to include a reed-thatch and dry gourds that have been transformed into beautiful hanging lights.

Henning Larsen Architects take the ugly grind out of industry with this handsome solar panel factory in Greece. Commissioned for Kilkis, an industrial area north of Thessaloniki, the factory’s dual purpose as a production facility and office space required a comfortable, practical, and sustainable design. Like other Henning Larsen projects, such as the Campus Roskilde and EnergyFlex house, the 100,000 square meter facility rises to the challenge by marrying passive design and modern technology to create a factory that is almost entirely self-sufficient.
