We’ve been covering the news on Germany’s nuclear phase-out for months, but this unique series of photographs provides a fascinating view into the power plants themselves. ‘Critical Mass/Kritische Masse’ is a selection of stunning images by photographer Michael Danner that offer up a more intimate perspective on the impact of the country’s phase-out policy. In this series he documents 17 nuclear power plants, highlighting their rarely seen interiors.

Recovering/Uncovering is a project that reclaims cardboard on its way to the dumpster, and re-uses it as canvases for portraits. Using a combination of line drawing, cross-hatching, and the natural corrugation of the cardboard, these works attempt to capture snapshots of real-life figures who are facets in today’s culture (if you’re wondering, that’s David Lynch above). Based out of Harrisburg, Recovering/Uncovering works to provide other artists with opportunities to complete projects that emphasize a spirit of reuse and sustainability.

Cupcakes seem to always be on our minds these days – from cupcake ATMs to delicious vegan pumpkin snacks – but we have to say this mosaic made from 10,000 of the delectable treats really “takes the cake.” The ambitious cherry blossom tree is completely edible, and it was made by the bakers from Crumbs and Doilies. The London cake shop team tiled thousands of colorful cupcakes in the shape of a huge cherry blossom tree for a Japanese TV show.

It may be hard to believe but artist Judith Braun creates these breathtaking works of art using just her fingers dipped in charcoal. Since 2004, Braun has been working on her simple but beautiful series “Fingerings”, an ongoing project in which she uses walls as canvases to explore liberating, improvised strokes with her hands. Braun freely expresses herself with gestures and movements recorded in carbon – without creating waste and excess.

We’ve seen museums grow from the ground up, but never literally – until now. New Hampshire artist F. Marek Modzelewski is planning to grow a field of wheat on a future museum site, harvest it, and then transform it into a permanent straw bale building with rotating exhibitions, making the museum itself a work of eco-art. Amsterdam-based artist Ronald van der Meijs designs architectonical installations and sculptural art, and he just finished a project called Sound Architecture IV that is made from 5,000 repurposed bicycle bells set on steel pins. As the wind picks up, the bells gently ring against one another, lending a visual and auditory component to invisible breezes. The installation is currently open in the art garden of the Anningahof Gallery in Zwolle, the Netherlands.
