Back in the 80s, Honda created a unique folding electric motorcycle called the Motocompo. Now the automaker is updating the unique scooter with its modernized “Motor Compo” version, which it displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show. The bike is less than 1 meter in length and height, and it features a removable battery that can be used as an emergency power source.

Last night Bay Area startup BRD officially unveiled the RedShift MX motocrosser and the RedShift SM supermoto — two new all-electric, zero-emissions motorcycles aimed at converting the gas-guzzling enthusiast who likes to ride hard and fast. The sporty vehicles were designed by a team of riders who weren’t satisfied with the electric bikes currently on the market. They harness the power of 40 horses and can go 50 miles on a charge, but with price tags around $15,000, these bikes better impress or BRD won’t see many making their way through the assembly line onto the hilly roads of California.

This bamboo Ajiro concept bicycle rethinks both our means of transportation and the ways we manufacture our vehicles. Designed by Monash University student Alexander Vittouris, the Ajiro utilizes a production process that removes emissions instead of releasing them into the Earth’s atmosphere. That’s because the bamboo structure of this vehicle is grown straight out of the ground into a preformed mold. Vittouris envisions fields of bamboo gardens growing these human powered bicycles, which need only small modifications once mature to hit the streets.

That’s what Jaryn Miller‘s Senza Bicycle promises — the lock is an integrated part of the bike that also serves as the handlebars, so when it is broken the function of the bike itself is compromised.

Behold, the SplinterBike — a bicycle made completely from wood that is capable of hitting a top speed of 31 mph! The cycle uses exclusively wooden components — from axles formed from hardwood ekki to cogs, wheels and a frame built from birch ply to “metal bearings” made of oily ironwood. The pedals and handlebars were constructed from an old broom handle. The design team believe that the bike has the potential to set the speed record for wooden bikes, but alas, none of them have actually ridden the bike, as there is no surface smooth enough to ride it.

This funky bike is making news today not just  for its design but for how it is made. UK engineers printed the bike using a powder composed of nylon and metal which results in a frame that has the strength of steel while also being 65% lighter than aluminum. The Air Bike is a demonstration of a technology called additive layer manufacturing which was able to create the fully working bike with only six parts. The goal is to show how the technology can revolutionize product design from airplanes to satellites to more down to earth items like bikes.
