It looks to have been a good year for green buildings in the federal sector; according to a new report, the number of federal LEED-certified projects has skyrocketed by 51% this year, from 544 completed in 2011 to 821 in just the first eight months of 2012. In a statement, the US Green Building Council’s Director for Technical Policy, Lane Burt said that the growth showed that the federal sector had learned to better incorporate green building design as a standard part of the construction process.

The Visayas Islands in the Philippines are gradually embracing renewable energy, and the capital city has just inaugurated its first green building – Iloilo City Hall. The building was recently unveiled by President Benigno S. Aquino III, and it features a roof topped with solar panels that will save $17,000 per year and prevent 36 metric tons of carbon dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere.

Toyota is well known for its efficient automobiles, but with news that 29 of their facilities have achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, the auto company stake their claim as a leader in green building. In California, earthquakes are commonplace, but with the possibility of the ‘Big One’ always looming, the state’s authorities are doing all they can to prepare for it. This week saw the construction of a mock five-story hospital built upon a ‘shake table‘ that was subjected to a fake 8.8-magnitude earthquake. The test was conducted in order to see how a hospital would fair in a real disaster, and to evaluate the benefits of using rubber bearings in building construction.

Every year, roughly one billion square feet of buildings are demolished and replaced with new construction in the United States, according to a new report from Preservation Green Lab, and that number is likely to escalate. That’s a lot of CO2 emissions and materials that could easily be saved. Since new buildings are generally more shiny and exciting though, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that the greenest building is almost always the one that’s already standing. It seems like common sense, but now we have the hard data to back it up. According to the highly-anticipated report, it can take up to 80 years for a new, energy-efficient building to overcome the environmental impact of the construction process.

Steven Holl, sculptor of air and light and principal at Steven Holl Architects was just named the 2011 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal Winner for his innovative designs and contributions to architecture. Holl who was born sixty-four years ago today is known for his attention to relationships between light, reflections, space and time. His structures span the world from Kauai, Hawaii to Hensinki, Finland to Seoul, South Korea and are all marked by a careful consideration for the relationship between space, light, reflection and time. Holl integrates sustainable building techniques into his designs, which often take advantage of natural lighting and ventilation. He molds structures that fit their surrounding environment and work with the environment to lower their impact.

While we’ve been talking about how cost-saving green architecture can be for some time now, a new nationwide government report has actually documented some impressive statistics that make it official. The Government Services Administration (GSA) commissioned the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to evaluate 22 green federal buildings across the country and came up with some amazing numbers showing that green buildings not only cost less to build and maintain, they also have happier, more satisfied occupants.
