A new smartphone app made by the folks at CORA may soon be available to eco-savvy individuals and businesses who are looking to make use of, or donate, old materials in lieu of sending them off to the local landfill. The new app lets users type in what kind of trash they are tossing and in turn shows them if someone nearby would like it, where they can recycle it, and it even offers a list of super cool upcycling DIY projects that make use of the trash! This app will certainly make people think twice before throwing out their seemingly unwanted items.

By asking themselves how  to add a more human touch to objects in the age of mass production, Joon & Jung created these adorable recycled alarm clocks made from recycled paper pulp. Born in Korea and based in the Netherlands, Joonsoo Kim, Jungyou Choi and Hyunwook Lee designed black and white versions of possibly the most hated appliance known to man and replaced the nasty plastic for hand-made, paper pulp iterations. These ‘Paper Alarm Clocks’ will wake you up in a softer way ensuring you start your day in a happier and more sustainable manner.

The Japanese company NSK has developed a guide dog that uses a Microsoft Kinect sensor to visualize the world around it and lead its owner out of danger. The dog glides around on four legs that have wheels attached to them instead of feet, and when it senses an obstacle it begins to climb. Using its hinged legs, the pooch climbs up and down stairs — albeit very slowly — with its charge following safely behind guided by a handle attached to the back of the dog. The Strawberry Tree is a public solar charger for mobile devices invented by a group of students from the University of Belgrade. Their invention was unveiled for the first time in Serbia in October of 2010, when it was installed in the ‘City Square’ in the center of Obrenovac, Serbia, where it still remains today. This technological giant uses solar panels to provide dependable energy, while also promoting the use of clean energy.

French student Florent Bouhey Fayolle created the Sun Container: an elegant freestanding radiator that uses sunlight as its power source. Inspired by the Trombe Wall system, this 120w passive solar heater draws sunlight through the glass cloche and stores heat in its slate fins before releasing it through the vents in the top of the glass. It can collect warm sunlight during the day and release warm air once the temperature has cooled.
