Designer Annie Evelyn from New Colony Furniture creates weird and wonderful seats using a technique she developed herself. Her “upholstered” chairs are made from hard materials but can be “squished” to provide for comfy seating. Her latest design, the Scotty Chair, is an elegant outdoor seat made from reclaimed Cypress wood.

Polish designer Asia Piaścik‘s Sugarcloud Lamp takes its inspiration from a sweet recipe inspired by traditional Polish crocheting techniques. Here, white cotton is first crocheted and then stiffened with a simple solution made up of water and sugar. The technique dates back to a time when Poles would make crocheted decorations for their Christmas trees, but Piaścik modernizes the method by magnifying her forms. We originally spotted this beautiful design, amongst others, at last month’s Milan Design Week.

Andrew Mowbray has developed a new kind of natural modular building unit. For the past two years, the artist has been growing Lagenaria gourds in reusable acrylic forms, creating square blocks that can be stacked and locked together. The gourd is believed to be one of the earliest cultivated plants; it is easily dried and made into functional vessels such as bottles, instruments, and birdhouses. In a time of immense resource scarcity, Mowbray has created a new and sustainable use for gourds. By training them to grow in a square shape, Mowbray is able to produce inexpensive, organic building blocks.

Inhabitat favorite, Molo, will be unveiling a brand new series of sustainable lamps in just a few weeks at this year’s ICFF in New York City. Founders and designers Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen designed their new LED SoftLight lamps with not only energy-efficiency in mind, but the beautiful lighting fixtures also aim to cut down on waste, featuring pillowy shades constructed from 100% recyclable Tyvek.

Lightweight yet exceptionally strong, these Bee Hive Lamps are a series of luminaries inspired in the busy insects’ homes. Created by London-based designer Marc Krusin for Alpac Srl, they’ve been constructed by layering Re-board, a patented, recycled, rigid paperboard manufactured in Sweden. And despite having a hard shell, Krusin’s Bee Hive Lamps give off a warm and inviting glow. Recycled, compostable and brilliant, we originally spotted this sweet lamp hanging at Milan Design Week.
