UK design student Kieron-Scott Woodhouse is preparing to launch ADzero – the world’s first smartphone made out of bamboo! Woodhouse told The Inquirer that he made the phone out of four-year-old organic bamboo that was treated for durability while he was studying at Middlesex University. An entrepreneur who specializes in tech products saw online pictures of the prototype, which currently runs on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, and offered to provide financial backing. The ADzero will be available at select independent UK retailers by the end of 2012.

Apple CEO Tim Cook just officially unveiled the iPhone 4S – instead of the much-anticipated iPhone 5 – at today’s live keynote in Cupertino – and although the next-generation device features the same retina display and glass-backed enclosure as the iPhone 4, the multi-tasking powerhouse packs an impressive set of new features under the hood. The latest edition of the iPhone features the company’s new dual-core A5 chip (which is twice as fast at CPU tasks) and a 7x faster dual-core graphics chip, however they were able to actually increase the device’s battery life to 8 hours of talk time by using more energy-efficient components. It also features an impressive 8 megapixel f/2.8 aperture camera with 1080p HD video recording that closes the gap on point-and-shoot cameras and video recorders, reducing the need for consumers to purchase additional devices, which incur a heavy cost on the environment. Samsung has announced that its new line of recyclable smart phones will feature an Android phone called the Replenish and a feature phone called Restore. The Replenish is an energy-efficient phone made of 34.6 percent post-consumer recycled plastics and is 82 percent recyclable itself, also claiming to use fewer environmentally sensitive materials such as PVC, brominated flame retardants, beryllium, and phthalates. A battery cover with solar cells on the back can be purchased as an accessory and the phone is packaged in recyclable materials that are printed with soy ink.

Dubbed “the Dial” by its inventor Jung Dae Hoon, this wearable technology is not exactly the greenest gadget, but we think the fact that it serves double duty as an accessory and has a small material footprint is worth mentioning. Here’s a great idea for a cell-phone that is thoroughly green in every way: from its biodegradable bamboo materials, to its thoughtfully considered lifecycle, to its ingenious use of kinetic human power to charge the battery with renewable energy. The ‘Bamboo’ phone, by Dutch designer Gert-Jan van Breugel was one of the finalists shortlisted at this year’s 2008 Greener Gadgets Design Competition (and Jill’s personal favorite). Although this design didn’t end up winning one of the coveted top three prizes in the competition, it certainly caught our kinetic-energy-loving eye.
