The first certified Passive House in Salt Lake City also happens to be the first certified Passive House in the Western US. The Breezeway House, designed by Brach Design Architecture and Illinois-based Passive House Institute was recently completed in December of 2009, and is now only 1 of 10 houses in the US to be certified under this super efficient green building certification program!

The Jacobson Residence is a brand new construction in Los Angeles with a high eco factor – enough so that it is Build It Green and ENERGY STAR certified! If you’re not familiar with Build It Green, it’s another green building certification, not quite as popular or well-known as USGBC’s LEED program, but still an effective tool to help build more sustainable homes. LA-based Wick Architecture was responsible for the design of this home, which includes rainwater collection, eco-materials, and energy and water efficient design (and we have to say it’s easy on the eyes too!).

This house in Leipzig, Germany designed by Atelier st combines contemporary styling with a degree of energy efficiency that comes close to Passive House standards. Yet the house features large expanses of glass that are unexpected for a house with the insulation requirements needed for such high performance. The residence is just 186 square meters (just over 2000 square feet), which is moderate by contemporary standards, but spacious for a 2-bedroom house, and its total annual energy usage is significantly lower than the electrical usage of the average American home.

LEED residences are becoming a standard item these days, but this particular residence hit our radar because of the high LEED score and its stunning appearance. The Sage Residence in Eugene, Oregon was designed and built by Arbor South Architecture, and received an impressive score of 110 in the LEED rating system — higher than USGBC founder David Gottfried’s LEED Platinum home, which only received 106.5 points. Beautiful inside and out, the home is a perfect example of how green homes can be beautiful, energy efficient and create minimal impact on the environment.

Located on a dense shoreline on Portage Bay in Seattle, WA, the Lobster Boat Residence, designed by Seattle-based Chadborne + Doss Architects, is beautiful home that leaves a small footprint. The home was re-modeled from its original state as a 24′ x 26′ residence with a ground floor and basement. As part of a larger shoreline community, the inhabitants of the Lobster Boat Residence shares waterfront access, parking, utilities and a vegetable garden with neighbors.

This brightly-colored home designed by Seattle-based Case Architects opened just a week ago, and was featured earlier on Jetson Green this week. The home’s most notable characteristic is its use of vibrant green CertainTeed Fiber Cement for exterior siding, however, the home is a host to a slew of other eco-friendly techniques such as a green roof balcony, rainwater collection, and radiant heat flooring. With rather un-conventional looks, the home still contains some cozy-looking interiors that we think just about anyone could feel right at home in this sustainably planned and built residence.

Designing and building a LEED Platinum house is reason enough for us to take notice. When the house is also the work of graduate students at the University of Kansas and it is designed to function off-grid, you can bet that we will anxiously follow its development. Studio 804′s 3716 Springfield House is a two-story residence that is exactly these things, and with the school year just wrapped up, so has the construction of this eco-friendly house in Kansas City.
