Engineering students at the University of Warwick are developing what could very well be the world’s fastest human-powered submarine! The vehicle is dubbed the HPS Shakespeare and it will attempt to beat the speed record of 8.08 mph currently held by a team from Montreal. The Warwick team is led by Dr Ian Tuersley and it includes students from around the world.

Car designer and entrepreneur Henrik Fisker made his name in the car industry designing the highest of the high-end luxury cars for BMW and Aston Martin. After making waves in the auto industry with vehicles such as the Aston Martin DB9, Aston Martin V8 Vantage and BMW Z8, he decided to break away from this corner of the auto world imbued with tradition and start his own company, Fisker Automotive. Fisker’s first vehicle to hit the road has been the Karma, an impressively green, extended range electric vehicle with so many curves, your eyes are already driving it before you’ve even gotten behind the wheel. Coming in as loud and clear as the Karma’s sex appeal, Henrik Fisker is on a mission to make green cars cool. We recently had a chance to talk to him about how he’s risen to the top of the electric vehicle pack, and where he plans on taking his cars from there.

Cambridge University Eco Racing just unveiled its revolutionary new solar car, which will be competing in the 2013 World Solar Challenge! The team blended aerodynamic and solar performance to create an incredibly efficient design. Industry experts from Jaguar Land Rover, investor Hermann Hauser and former principle of Red Bull Racing, Tony Purnell have expressed their confidence that CUER can win next year’s competition.

A team of Utah State University researchers have set a land speed record in their class with a dragster powered by cheese! The Aggie A-Salt Streamliner runs on yeast biodiesel derived from the industrial waste of cheese production. However despite its dairy-based origins, the hot rod performed impressively at the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association’s 2012 World of Speed event and broke the land speed record for one-liter engine vehicles.

Audi recently shared with Inhabitat a development that it’s been keeping under wraps – a new solution dubbed “e-sound” that helps pedestrians hear electric vehicles approaching. Audi’s future e-tron electric models are incredibly quiet and great for the environment, but their lack of sound isn’t great for pedestrians in urban settings. To combat this issue, the carmaker has been working on a noise to replicate a non-electric car’s motor. Read on to learn more and to check out a video showing their process.

BMW just officially unveiled its gorgeous i8 Concept Spyder, which is the third BMW i model following the i3 and i8 concepts. The BMW i8 Concept Spyder offers a glimpse of future supercars with its lightweight design and hybrid technology, which combine to create a world class sports car that consumes no more fuel than a small car. The Spyder is a topless, shorter version of the i8 Concept coupe. It is propelled by a 131 horsepower electric motor that powers the front wheels and a turbocharged three-cylinder gas engine with 223 horsepower sends power to the rear wheels. The hybrid system puts out a combined 354 horsepower and propels the concept from 0-62 mph in five seconds.

Volkswagen of America has announced that it will begin a pilot scheme to test 20 prototype E-Golf battery electric vehicles over a nine-month period in Detroit, San Francisco, and Washington D.C., beginning in April. By studying  electric Golf use across multiple geographical regions, Volkswagen will monitor the effect of climate conditions, driving patterns, and energy performance. The data and insights gained during the nine-month test period will be used in the final development of Volkswagen’s future EV technology applications.

The 2012 Ford Focus Electric is now officially America’s most fuel-efficient five-passenger car, with a rating of 110 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) city and 99 MPGe highway. The Focus Electric also has a 105 MPGe combined rating, which beats its closest competitor, the Nissan Leaf, by 6 MPGe. The Focus Electric also offers more power, passenger room and standard features than the Leaf and beats the Leaf on the highway with its 99 MPGe rating compared to the Leaf’s 92 MPGe.

Tesla – the company that made electric vehicles sexy for the first time – just announced that they’re on track to get the first Model S sedans on the road next summer. While talking to Autoblog at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, Tesla Motors vice president of communications, Ricardo Reyes, said that they are finishing up their final preparations to release the cars in the U.S. by the summer and to the rest of the world about six months after that. Tesla is offering an impressive range selection for the Model S — 160, 230 or 300 miles depending on the cash you shell out — and they’re planning to build a “supercharging network” that will charge their vehicles from 10% to 90% in just 45 minutes. In addition to opening up the roads to all-electric, zero-emissions long-distance road trips Tesla will be unveiling the look of their new Model X — a seven passenger crossover SUV — in February.
