If seeing all those disposable coffee cups spilling out of your office trashcan gives you heartache, then give them a new home in the Naturwall. This cool living wall system reuses disposable coffee and tea cups as plant pots to create a lush green wall. Each system features a very simple, flexible metal rack that can hold between 10-12 cups. The carbon-free design aims to reduce plastic waste while serving as a do-it-yourself decoration. Designed by Dr.Hakan Gürsu and Designnobis, the Naturwall was also honored with the Green Dot 2008 Build Award.

KaneSterling, an architectural products company, recently unveiled its newest product: a revolutionary living wall system made of steel wire panels that attach to outdoor structural walls. Called, Eco Screen by Kane, the easy to install structure allows buildings to be wrapped in greenery which cleans the surrounding air, and makes the area more aesthetically pleasing. In addition, Eco Screen provides Credit 4 under LEED for Recycled Content and Credit 5 under LEED for Regional Material.

San Francisco based company Habitat Horticulture recently installed 3 gorgeous green wall partitions for The Metreon City View patio space overlooking Yerba Buena Gardens. The movable living walls create functional gardens in a tight urban space, providing greenery for city dwellers and for the downtown area of San Francisco. Comprised of succulents and sedums, the 3 freestanding mobile living wall partitions are used to break up a 300 ft patio space that is used for cooperate events. The living wall partitions offer a dramatic aesthetic transformation to the concrete patio space and can be manipulated to create a lush and intimate “living room” or aligned horizontally to close off the unused space.

Over the past several years, PNC Financial Services has upped the ante on green design in downtown Pittsburgh with the 2009 construction of Three PNC Plaza, a LEED-certified office building, and the addition of one of the world’s biggest green walls at One PNC Plaza. Now, the financial company is preparing to break ground on another office tower that architect Doug Gensler describes as “the world’s most environmentally friendly skyscraper.”

Parker Urban Greenscapes, a division of Parker Interior Plantscapes Inc, recently installed the largest BioWall in the United Stated at Drexel University’s new Papadakis Integrated Sciences Building. The Drexel students, faculty and visitors are greeted each day by this mammoth 22-foot wide, 80-foot tall BioWall which boasts over 1,500 plants. The BioWall is actually an integrated part of the building’s air handling system. Air is actively drawn through the wall of plants then past their root systems. In the root zone, highly specialized microbes actively degrade pollutants such as formaldehyde and benzene into the benign constituents of water and carbon dioxide. The clean air is then distributed throughout the space. “The Drexel BioWall is one of the most significant advancements in controlling indoor air quality in the US. Parker is proud to be a part of this extremely important project and its success,” said Richard Parker, President of Parker Interior Plantscapes Inc.

The Whittier Organic Food Center is a state-of-the-art food production testing and learning facility that recently took top honors in the Cavin Family Travel Fellowship. The project creates opportunities for social sustainability in Los Angeles, leasing areas of the garden and tower green walls to locals for micro-agro business. Crops are stored for disaster relief, and distribution and sales to local restaurants and school cafeterias, germinating like a seed in the community. The on-site food bank reaches out to those in need and provides on-site housing for students and trade laborers wishing to pursue work in urban agriculture.

The people behind the unreal-looking ACROS building in Japan have done it again, this time for a medical facility in Venice. Emilio Ambasz Associates touched the tips of two 12 meter pre-stained copper walls together to enclose a series of stepped green terraces, creating a massive green roofed amphitheater. Called the Eye Bank and located in Venice, this inventive building is kept cool by its angled walls and greenery, which reduce its mechanical load while also creating the type of dramatic visual impact the firm is known for.
