Four years ago, Ai Weiwei and Herzog & de Meuron made waves with their Bird’s Nest National Stadium for the Beijing Olympics. Now they will be turning heads again, this time by designing the 2012 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, which will be on display during the London Olympics. This will be their first project together in the UK and one of Ai Weiwei’s first major works after his incarceration in China last year. The trio’s intriguing design for the Serpentine Gallery will actually dig into the ground to uncover traces of each of the eleven previous pavilions, much like an archeological dig.

Apparently crime is down in Hong Kong, because the historical district is trying to figure out what to do with the disused Central Police Station. Architecture giants Herzog and De Meuron in collaboration with Purcell Miller Tritton presented an option last year to turn the jail into a non-profit visual arts space. The art organization Asia Art Archive (AAA), in partnership with the British curator David Elliott acting as consultant to the project, are fully supportive of the project and funding has been found. Transformation of the 19th century British-colonial jail is hoped to be locked down by 2014.

A master plan for the city of Beirut is guiding the rehabilitation of the coastal city, and Herzog & de Meuron just unveiled an open and airy apartment development located in the central district. Beirut Terraces, seen over at Dezeen, is a composed of a series of terraces with various sized apartments and large open outdoor living areas. The apartment complex is rich with lush vegetation at the ground floor entrance and features hanging gardens integrated throughout the building. Solar passive design, daylighting and energy efficiency also play a strong roll in the design of the apartments.

Next Monday the Parrish Art Museum, located along the Montauk Highway in Water Mill, will officially break ground, introducing a beautiful new design by Pritzker Prize-winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. The Parrish Museum, which is currently settled within a storied Southamption Village construction, will next open its doors the summer of 2012 with a brand-new 34,500-square-foot modern structure consisting of two parallel single-story wings settled on a lush 14-acre site. The new museum has been thoughtfully designed to be discrete in nature, responding not only to the local architecture, but to the natural conditions of the site including the indigenous landscape.

Today in Hamburg the “topping-out” celebrations began for the city’s new cultural landmark on the Elbe River. Elbphilharmonie started construction a year and a half ago and is now reaching completion. The fantastical concert hall adds more than just an auditorium to the city, as the mixed-use complex also includes a hotel, restaurants, a conference center, condos, a public plaza, and more. Herzog + de Meuron’s creation renovates and old historic brick shipping warehouse with a larger structure covered in glass.

Herzog & de Meuron recently unveiled their finished design for the new Miami Art Museum, which will be a stunning building surrounded by hanging gardens with tropical plants. Fit for a world renowned art museum, the new MAM will be three times as large as the existing building and will be aiming for LEED Silver certification. A fluid and adaptable interior layout combined with outdoor gardens and sculpture exhibition space will allow the MAM to expand for future growth.

Officials have recently unveiled the new design for the Elbphilharmonie, the new home for the Hamburg Philharmonic to be inaugurated in 2012. The concert hall is currently being constructed in the industrial quarter of HafenCity, an area undergoing major revitalization with the conversion of hundreds of dated warehouses. As one of the more understated German cities, Hamburg is hoping the striking design by architects Herzog + de Meuron will bring the sort of landmark cultural transformation that was seen more than a decade ago in Bilbao, Spain with the opening of Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum. But such a transformation won’t come cheap, with a price tag upwards of 323 million Euros, some are asking “Is it really worth it?”

This gorgeous plaza near the wharf of Santa Cruz de Tenerife represents the connection between the nearby ocean and the various ecosystems of the Canary islands. Designed by Herzog + de Meuron, Plaza de España introduces a beautiful green space that builds upon the past of the site and the future of the city. Many years ago the plaza was the site of a “Castillo,” and the graphic motif in the basin of water represents the foundation of the old castle. Around the basin, many architectural landscape elements — including the two structures with green roofs — represent the Islands’ diverse ecosystems and topography.

Herzog and de Meuron have been very busy lately designing some amazing new buildings in Europe, like their Project Triangle in Paris. Their newest design for the Spanish banking group BBVA will be built on the outskirts of Madrid as early as 2013. The verdant green headquarters will feature luscious gardens and will create it’s own microclimate by using natural ventilation, evapotranspiration, and the shade of the gardens and buildings to create a cool artificial oasis on a desert-like site. The project is meant to function as a small city, encouraging people to walk and meet within the outdoor spaces.

Some stunning pictures recently surfaced of Herzog and De Meuron‘s latest oeuvre, a £600 million soccer stadium to be constructed in Portsmouth, England. In keeping with their Beijing Bird’s Nest, the venerable Swiss architects have created a striking 36,000 seat stadium that will include an exhibition center, housing, and a park. Envisioned as a shining waterfront beacon, the development will revitalize Horsea Island (a former landfill site) via an abundance of green spaces, a sustainable energy program, and a low-carbon emission scheme.

If you had to pick 100 architects to build a city, who would you choose? That’s the challenge posed by Jian Yuan Water Engineering, which has commissioned a plan to create one hundred villas in the city of Ordos, Inner Monglolia, China, comprised of 100 different design solutions by 100 up-and-coming architects. None other than Jacques Herzog of Herzog and De Meuron headed up the selection of emerging architectural talents from all over the world!
