Ghanian artist El Anatsui recently brought his distinctive style to New York’s High Line park with a striking tapestry of tin and mirrors that seems to shatter the side of the building it adorns. Called Broken Bridge II, the temporary installation uses recycled tin that has the ability to be reused again after the the work is dismantled. Architect and New Yorker Laurence Tamaccio has come up with an interesting solution to beautify the unsightly stretch of the West Side Highway that spans his neighborhood – blanketing it in a leafy green “Vine Line”. Architect and New Yorker Laurence Tamaccio has come up with an interesting solution to beautify the unsightly stretch of the West Side Highway that spans his neighborhood – blanketing it in a leafy green “Vine Line”. His proposed solution would entail covering one side of the highway with a trellis system that could then be planted with air-cleaning ivy interspersed with sections of dramatic waterfalls. Tamaccio has already created a presentation and petition for the plan, which he thinks could transform an eyesore into a beautiful focal point for the whole community.

Aptly named LOCAL: Make the Switch, the project will consist of 25 short films and an ambitious social media site that seeks to turn our media consumption into positive action. To help get the films in the can they are looking to Kickstarter for some love. With inspiring stories on rooftop gardens, eco hub communities, and the Living Building Challenge, LOCAL will provide the key insights about how we can make new urbanism a reality.

The High Line urban park project in New York City opened last summer to tremendous excitement from locals and tourists alike looking to escape the bustling streets for a more peaceful, green enclave in the sky. NYC’s High Line is a project that exemplifies effective adaptive urban re-use in a city that is littered with structures and spaces that have since reached the end of their useful life. By turning an abandoned, elevated freight train track into a public park, this project has redefined the New York experience, affording never-before seen views of the city’s surrounding natural landscape as well as an expansive and intimate look into one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments. With the completion of the rest of the High Line currently in the works, we couldn’t think of a better time to catch up with one of the brilliant minds behind the design of this beautiful public space. I recently sat down with landscape designer James Corner, the lead designer behind the High Line, to get his personal perspective on the what it was like to take an abandoned train track and turn it into one of NYC’s best loved spots of greenery. After two years of construction a 12 acre strip of downtown Los Angeles has been transformed into a multi-functional green space dubbed Grand Park – and it’s set to open to the public this weekend! Landscape architects Rios Clementi Hale Studios designed the project, which turned a cascade of parking lots and hidden spaces into a green park which provides for large scale events and casual relaxation alike. The city hopes the park will serve as an “urban oasis,” bringing a new “spirit and vitality” to the area, which sits between many of Los Angeles’ civic buildings.

Initial design plans have been revealed for the third and final section of everyone’s favorite elevated park, New York City’s High Line! At a community meeting last night, Friends of the High Line unveiled several colorful renderings from architects James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The park’s third section will wrap around the forthcoming Hudson Yards development and be closely integrated with the new buildings. From the looks of it, the new section will include some familiar elements as well as some brand new features. Hit the jump to get all the details!

Diller Scofidio + Renfro beat out fierce competition to apply the same urban revitalization savvy to Aberdeen, Scotland as they did to New York’s cherished High Line park. DS+ R went up against Foster + Partners to clinch the final win, which the designers told our friends over at WAN only encouraged them to work harder for a more compelling design. They and the residents of Aberdeen will definitely be rewarded for their efforts. When complete, the “Granite Web” will feature a gorgeous new green park, a partially buried performance center, and a cultural arts center, all of which are expected to completely transform the heart of this historic city.

When it opened in 2009, New York City’s High Line, an elevated train track that was converted into a park, instantly became one of the most celebrated modern parks in the world. So it should come as little surprise that New Yorkers are looking to tap the concept and the energy of the High Line in other new urban parks. A group of NYC entrepreneurs have come up with a plan to convert another abandoned rail line into a park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The difference: The proposed park will be located entirely underground. A group that includes Dan Barasch from PopTech, money manager R. Boykin Curry IV, and architect James Ramsey recently announced plans to convert a dark, dank subway track beneath Delancey Street into an inviting ‘Low Line‘ park. The proposal is not without its challenges. To stream natural light into the subterranean chamber, the group proposes to pump natural sunlight into the underground space using fiberoptic cables and mirrors.
