Urban Green Energy Inc has installed 120 solar and wind-powered streetlights in PingQuan, situated in the Hebei province of China. Instead of opting for costly traditional lights that would have needed to sink wires into the ground and connect to the grid, the city chose a more sustainable route. Each Sanya light is equipped with a HoYi! wind turbine and two 280 watt solar panels, allowing them to function completely off-grid.

A new report by the National Research Council has some good news for the future of US transportation. By taking advantage of biofuels, new vehicle technology, and policy reform, America has the potential to reduce petroleum consumption and greenhouse gas emissions up to 80% by 2050. The numbers apply to cars and small trucks, both of which are expected to become more efficient in both fuel economy and design in the coming years.

Hybrid cars continue to get sexier! Meet the Ferrari LaFerrari hybrid supercar that was unveiled today at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The LaFerrari is Ferrari’s successor to the Enzo, and it features the first application of a hybrid system in one of the luxury automaker’s road cars. The hot hybrid is able to go from 0-62 mph in under three seconds and it can hit 124 mph in just seven seconds.

Ford’s all-new 2013 C-MAX Plug-in hybrid was just rated as most fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid available in the U.S. thanks to its 108 MPGe city rating and 100 MPGe combined rating. For the second year in a row, Audi has grabbed the top spot at the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race, and this time Audi crossed the finish line first in a hybrid! The Audi R18 e-ton quattro diesel hybrid dominated this year’s race. Audi entered four race cars in the race: two R18 e-tron hybrids and two R18s with a conventional diesel engine. At the end of the race the four Audi R18 race cars took the one, two, three and five positions.

Audi recently shared with Inhabitat a development that it’s been keeping under wraps – a new solution dubbed “e-sound” that helps pedestrians hear electric vehicles approaching. Audi’s future e-tron electric models are incredibly quiet and great for the environment, but their lack of sound isn’t great for pedestrians in urban settings. Honda gave us a preview of Acura’s new supercar with their NSX concept at this year’s Detroit Auto Show, and now fans of the car have something new to be excited about. The NSX concept was the preview of the much anticipated successor to the NSX supercar, but unlike the original NSX that was solely powered by a V6 engine, the NSX concept featured a new hybrid drivetrain.  Honda CEO President Takanobu Ito recently confirmed that the same hybrid system will be used in the next Acura RL flagship sedan.

General Motors recently announced that it will halt production of the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid for up to five weeks due to poor sales and rising inventory numbers. In February GM sold 1,023 Volts, but at the end of the month the automaker still had 6,300 Volts in its inventory. Even worse, GM hopes to sell 45,000 units this year, but only selling 1,626 units in the first two months of this year is not exactly the pace that the Volt needs to set to meet that goal. Low Volt sales have been partially attributed to negative attention the vehicle has garnered over the last few months, as safety concerns rose over battery fires and Republicans turned the vehicle into a political punching bag.
