<p>A team from the <a href="http://www.nrl.navy.mil/media/news-releases/2013/nrl-shatters-endurance-record-for-small-electric-uav">U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL)</a> have broken their own record after flying their hydrogen fuel cell powered-<a href="http://www.nrl.navy.mil/media/news-releases/2013/nrl-shatters-endurance-record-for-small-electric-uav">Ion Tiger UAV</a> for an astonishing 48 hours and 1 minute last month. The <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/uav/">UAV</a>, which used liquid hydrogen fuel in its  new, NRL-developed, cryogenic fuel storage tank and delivery system, broke its previous record of 26 hours and 2 minutes which it set in 2009.</p>

<p>In a breakthrough that could be a game-changer for <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/fuel-cell/">hydrogen fuel cell vehicles</a>, <a href="http://www.vtnews.vt.edu/articles/2013/04/040413-cals-hydrogen.html">researchers at Virginia Tech have discovered</a> a way to extract large amounts of hydrogen from any plant. Current methods of producing hydrogen are expensive and they generate greenhouse gases. If this new method of hydrogen extraction proves to be as successful as initial findings suggest, the process could be commercialized and widely adopted within three years.</p>

<p>Researchers in <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/singapore/">Singapore</a> have developed a new nanomaterial that functions like the best Swiss army knife in the world. The material, known as <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2013-03/ntu-nsd032013.php">Multi-use Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)</a>, can produce energy, it can generate hydrogen, and it can even produce clean water. But that&#8217;s not all: The remarkable material can also be formed into flexible solar cells and it can double the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries. And with bacteria-killing properties, it can also be used in new antibacterial bandages.</p>

<p>For some of us, it takes a couple of cups of coffee to wake up and hit the road. The Bean Machine, a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/coffee-powered-car-gets-56-espressos-per-mile/">coffee-powered</a> pickup built by UK engineer and conservationist Martin Bacon, takes the notion of caffeine-based energy to a whole new level. Commissioned by <a title="Welcome to The Co-operative Food" href="http://www.co-operativefood.co.uk/welcome/" target="_blank">The Co-operative Food </a>to commemorate their 10th anniversary of converting all of their coffee to fair trade, the truck set a Guinness World Record for the highest speed ever attained by a java-powered vehicle, clocking in at 65mph.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.ford.com">Ford</a>, <a href="http://www.nissanusa.com">Nissan</a> and <a href="http://www.mbusa.com">Mercedes-Benz</a> have announced a new three-way partnership to accelerate the development of fuel cell electric vehicle technology, with the ultimate goal of releasing a mass market fuel cell vehicle by 2017. The goal of the collaboration is to jointly develop a common <a href="http://inhabitat.com/index.php?s=fuel+cell+vehicle">fuel cell electric vehicle</a> system while reducing investment costs associated with the engineering of the technology. Each company will invest equally towards the project as a strategy to maximize design commonality, leverage volume and derive efficiencies through economies of scale.</p>

<p>Do you feel a twinge of guilt every time you fill your tank with dirty gasoline? What if you could power your car with a carbon neutral fossil fuel substitute? Introducing <a title="Audi of America &gt; Luxury Has Progressed" href="http://progress.audiusa.com/" target="_blank">Audi&#8217;s</a> new e-fuel, an energy source that powers a standard engine like gas or diesel, but uses CO2 instead of dead dinosaurs and petrified algae. Seeing as most electric cars have a somewhat limited range, long charging time, and small nationwide re-fueling infrastructure, most believe that a majority of drivers will be riding around with an internal combustion engine for the next couple decades. The e-fuel has the benefit of already being able to take advantage of gas stations as well as the landfills and non-potable water sources it needs to create the compound. Here is how it works:</p>

At first glance the Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force looks like an oversized SUV, which brings up memories of the now extinct <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nation-es-electric-hummer-h1-offers-disaster-relief/">Hummer</a> vehicles &#8211; but what lies under the hood is a green <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/fuel-cell/">fuel cell</a> power train that only emits water. According to Mercedes-Benz, the concept is a design study that demonstrates how the genes of the classic <a href="http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/vehicles/class/class-G">G-Class</a> from 1979 may still assert themselves far into the future.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.airfuelsynthesis.com/home.html" target="_blank">Air Fuel Synthesis (AFS)</a>, a small firm in Stockton-on-Tees, UK, has succeedin in synthesizing gasoline from water and carbon dioxide (CO2) extracted from air. <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/exclusive-pioneering-scientists-turn-fresh-air-into-petrol-in-massive-boost-in-fight-against-energy-crisis-8217382.html" target="_parent"><em>The Independent</em> reported on Friday</a> that the company has manufactured five liters of gas since August using a small refinery at its demonstrator plant. While that is a small volume to start with, AFS plans larger demonstrations and commercial-scale production. Essentially, the process will allow <a href="http://inhabitat.com/energy/">renewable energy</a> to be converted into usable fuel in a sustainable carbon-neutral process.</p>

<p>Hydrogen is a fuel that has seemingly limitless potential, but scientists have only been able to produce it from fossil fuels, like natural gas. That is, until now. A doctoral student in mechanical engineering at the University of Delaware <a href="http://www.physorg.com/news/2012-04-solar-reactor-enable-fuel-derived.html">has designed a new type of reactor</a> that produces hydrogen using nothing more than concentrated sunlight, zinc oxide, and water. And best of all, the zinc oxide used by the reactor can be reused, meaning that once the reactor is up and running, it would be self-sustaining.</p>

Well now they&#8217;ve taken another huge sustainable step by installing a dozen 100kw <a href="http://www.bloomenergy.com/products/">Bloom Energy Servers</a> (aka ‘<a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/2010/03/19/oorja-unveils-micro-fuel-cell-that-could-power-your-house/">Bloom boxes</a>’) to handle up to one-third of the entire electricity consumption of the their headquarters, which includes three high-rises and a parking structure.</p>

<p>The human body is arguably one of the finest machines ever created by nature, and now a team from <a href="http://english.dnva.no/">Norway’s Academy of Science and Letters</a> in Oslo are looking to it for inspiration as they design the next generation of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/2010/08/23/researchers-use-urea-to-create-low-cost-fuel-cells/">hydrogen fuel cells</a>. More specifically, they are looking at the lungs &#8212; according to Signe Kjelstrup, who is heading the team, making fuel cells in the shape of lungs could cut down on the amount of expensive catalysts needed, such as platinum, while increasing efficiency. It is hoped that the research will enable <a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/2009/09/29/fastest-electric-vehicle-in-the-world-smashes-300mph-record/">hydrogen cars</a> to manufactured en mass.</p>

<p>Italian company Enel SpA made <a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/energy">renewable energy</a> history this week when it opened the world&#8217;s first <a href="http://inhabitat.com/2010/05/28/students-designed-72-hydrogen-fueled-gremlin-in-1972-for-sale-on-ebay/" target="_blank">hydrogen</a>-driven power plant to produce a significant amount of electricity in Fusina, Italy. The plant, located just outside Venice, will produce 16 megawatts of power, or enough energy for <strong>20,000 homes</strong>. Enel&#8217;s power plant will also save 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions compared to a coal plant.</p>

<p>Photovoltaic solar cells are available in two types &#8212; crystalline silicon cells, which are more <a href="http://inhabitat.com/2009/08/25/australian-scientists-develop-worlds-most-efficient-solar-cell/" target="new">efficient</a> but more expensive, and amorphous silicon cells, which are less efficient but cheaper and thinner and therefore more <A href="http://inhabitat.com/index.php?s=thin+film+solar" target="new">adaptable</a>. New research from the Technical University of Delft, Netherlands, has <a href="http://www.tudelft.nl/live/pagina.jsp?id=63a3cd64-183b-41cf-a198-947467e4146c&amp;lang=en" target="new">found</a> that using hydrogen in the production of amorphous silicon, or &#8220;thin film,&#8221; cells can increase their efficiency <strong>from the usual 7 percent to roughly 9 percent</strong>. </p>

<p>In 1972, 64 teams of university students competed to design the greenest vehicle in the Urban Vehicle Design Challenge.
