Last week, we showcased the Bicycle Library, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, and it was so unusual that we had to get in touch with its founder and pick his brain. We needed to know what makes a person wake up one morning and want to start a library where people take out bikes instead of books – and in a revamped double decker bus, no less?! So we caught up with Karta Healy, the driving (or should we say cycling?) force behind this mobile resource, and found out the answers to those questions and more – read on to see what he said.

Everyone from design nerds and art critics to tech geeks and gadget junkies has sung the praises of “Talk to Me,” the Museum of Modern Art’s latest special exhibit that puts technology and interactive design in the spotlight. Put together by MoMA design curator Paola Antonelli, the show features nearly 200 pieces that range from talking plant sensors to robotic animal simulations to digital designs for building facades, each exploring how objects communicate with us. We were treated to a special guided tour of the exhibit by Antonelli herself, and we had the chance to talk with her about how technology impacts our lives and what she thinks about the future of sustainable design.

The artist recently brought his colorful TreeHouse made of sustainable materials to Governor’s Island in NYC for the annual Figment Festival and it was an instant hit with kids and adults alike! We wanted to know more about the inspiration behind the arboreal home’s recycled design so we caught up with Benjamin to ask him everything from where he sourced his supplies to what cool interactive art projects he’ll be hatching next. Buildings account for almost half (48%) of all greenhouse-gas emissions annually. This oft-repeated statistic highlights what many architects and designers have long realized: the building industry has a profound impact on the state of our environment. But is environmental awareness really making enough inroads into the curriculum of design schools, in the places where it could potentially have the most impact on the future of the industry? While environmental design isn’t nearly as entrenched as it should be into the core curriculums of design schools, students seem to be clamoring to learn more about this topic and are demanding new classes and are shaping their own academic paths. To discuss the future of greening architecture schools, we sat down with Mark Wigley, dean of Columbia’s GSAPP, to talk about the changes currently taking place.
