Meta Material showed people at this year’s Milan Design Week that just because you want to breathe clean air does not mean you have to use a clunky and industrial-looking contraption to do the job. The Italian company’s recycled corrugated cardboard kits can be shaped into many forms – from a cute cactus to a minimalist cube - and act as both anti-bacterial air filters and room decor.

Addressing a string of deadly kerosene lamp accidents in slums that have killed hundreds of people and left even more homeless, designer Alain Gilles created a safer alternative called the Nomad solar lamp that will be presented at Milan Design Week 2012. Featuring 12 energy-efficient LED lights, a 5-watt solar panel, and two lithium-ion batteries, the plastic lamp has a silicon crown and is designed specifically for people who do not have access to the national grid for electricity. It can be hung up, stood alone, or carried by a handle when on the go, and it was designed to be durable enough to withstand accidental abuse.

Italian design firm Avatar Architettura is well-known for their ability to turn recycled wooden pallets into inspiring works of art – like this fun pavilion in Italy. Designed as a temporary art installation for the Villa Romana at the German Institute of Culture in Florence, the 100-square-foot structure was made from diamond-shaped pallets held together by custom-made joints.

IKEA is marketing its big annual sale with a line of clever furniture pieces made entirely out of the company’s very own flat pack furniture packaging. IKEA commissioned advertising agency AUGE Headquarter in Italy to make a big splash for their 40% sale, and that’s exactly what they’ve done by designing a table, a chair, and a table lamp – all made out of cardboard.

Electric superbikes enable bikers to travel the roads knowing they are both cool and environmentally friendly. While prototypes have been developed to break speed records, there still isn’t a commercial version available for the average consumer. However CRP Racing have unveiled a prototype e-superbike at the EICMA motorcycle show in Italy that could be hitting the roads in the near future.

Greenpeace members rallied last week in Italy to protest Brazilian leather and the mass deforestation it has been causing in the Amazon. The Greenpeacers dressed up in bark-like sustainable materials and stood outside of the Linea Pelle leather trade show in Bologna to raise awareness for the issue, holding signs that said “Save Your Skin” or “Save Your Leather,” depending on how the Italian word “pelle” is translated. Cattle ranching (which supplies leather makers with the hides they need) is responsible for 80 percent of deforestation in Brazil, and Greenpeace is hoping that the ruckus they’re making will put an end to that.

We’re green with envy over Designboom‘s summer offices on the island of Sardinia, west of their home base in Milan. Seeking to get out of the city for the summer, the Designboom team tackled a DIY project they’ve been dreaming about for years – they built an office out of shipping containers! We’re not sure what makes us more jealous – the fact that they get to work in Sardinia with views of the ocean, or that they get to work in awesome repurposed shipping containers.
