The High Line urban park project in New York City opened last summer to tremendous excitement from locals and tourists alike looking to escape the bustling streets for a more peaceful, green enclave in the sky. NYC’s High Line is a project that exemplifies effective adaptive urban re-use in a city that is littered with structures and spaces that have since reached the end of their useful life. By turning an abandoned, elevated freight train track into a public park, this project has redefined the New York experience, affording never-before seen views of the city’s surrounding natural landscape as well as an expansive and intimate look into one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments. With the completion of the rest of the High Line currently in the works, we couldn’t think of a better time to catch up with one of the brilliant minds behind the design of this beautiful public space. I recently sat down with landscape designer James Corner, the lead designer behind the High Line, to get his personal perspective on the what it was like to take an abandoned train track and turn it into one of NYC’s best loved spots of greenery. Section two of New York City’s High Line Park opened recently to great acclaim, and Team Inhabitat were among the first to catch a glimpse of this amazing new green space! The High Line is a renovated train track that has been turned into a gorgeous greenway in the sky on the West side of Manhattan near the Hudson River. Conceived of by Friends of the High Line and executed by James Corner Field Operations and Diller, Scofidio and Renfro for the City of New York, the High Line is one of our favorite urban spaces. Initial design plans have been revealed for the third and final section of everyone’s favorite elevated park, New York City’s High Line! At a community meeting last night, Friends of the High Line unveiled several colorful renderings from architects James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The park’s third section will wrap around the forthcoming Hudson Yards development and be closely integrated with the new buildings. From the looks of it, the new section will include some familiar elements as well as some brand new features. Hit the jump to get all the details!

Inhabitat recently toured the future site of Freshkills Park, a reclaimed landfill in New York City’s Staten Island that is currently being capped and repopulated with native flora and fauna. The reclamation project by James Corner Field Operations will transform what once was the world’s largest landfill into New York’s second largest park, and phase one should open within the next ten years. During our visit, Inhabitat got a glimpse of the panoramic views available from the South and North Mounds, witnessed the return of native wildlife, and got some insight into gas generation and the possible reuse of Department of Sanitation infrastructure. We have been jumping out of our skin waiting for Section 2 of the High Line to open in New York City, and today we finally got a first look inside! The second section was unveiled during an exclusive press preview, and we were on the scene to bring you photos of the new extension. The expansion was designed by the same amazing team that created the first part, James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, but Section 2 definitely has its own personality. With a thicket of trees, a wildflower field, an elevated flyover, and a lush grassy lawn, Section 2 is truly a unique escape from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle. Good news, New Yorkers: that gem of urban green space, the High Line, will more than double in length by next spring. Fast Company tells us that architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro and landscape firm James Corner Field Operations will roll out some fascinating new features in the 10-block extension of the park reclaimed from a defunct rail line.
