Istanbul’s Bayrampasa municipality has claimed the world record for knitting the world’s largest sweater. Inspired by National Sweater Day, which is celebrated in Canada every February 9, the 151-foot-long striped sweater is part of a campaign by the Turkish government to encourage its people to lower their thermostats and wear warmer clothing. Ninety people collaborated to knit the sweater in 30 days, using about 1,100 pounds of wool yarn.

Working on your laptop in public can be distracting, and it can be difficult to keep your work private from the wandering eyes of the people around you. Electronics guru Becky Stern came up with a playful solution to both problems with this knitted “Compubody” garment that will keep your head and hands warm while sealing you off from your surroundings. But don’t worry; Stern isn’t entirely serious about wearing the thing. Instead, she views it as “a fun commentary on how attached and concentrated on technology we are, and to highlight the lack of movement that happens when we’re engrossed in our laptops, keyboards, PDAs, etc.”

Technology advances in the blink of an eye – while many are obsessed with the latest high-tech devices, let’s not forget that low-tech innovation can also be revolutionary. ECAL students Damien Ludi and Colin Peillex have created a brilliant “Rocking Knit” chair that uses kinetic energy generated from the chair’s gliding motion to knit a winter hat while you sit! The pair unveiled the multitasking rocker at ECAL‘s ‘Low-Tech Factory’ exposition during Designers’ Saturday in Langenthal, Switzerland.

Time often seems to fly past with the ticking hands of a clock — but this intriguing 365 Knitting Clock unveiled by Norwegian designer Siren Elise Wilhelmsen at the Milan Furniture Fair turns traditional time telling on its head. Wilhelmsen swapped numbers for wool yarns to visualize time in a new physical form that changes and develops as days pass — the clock will knit a 2 meter long scarf over the course of a year. The un-knitted thread is also placed on display as a sign of how much time is left of the current year. Often products that create strong emotional attachments are more likely to survive in today’s throwaway society, and we think that the 365 Knitting Clock is a great example of multifunctional design that resonates with the passage of time.

Perusing Designboom this morning we saw this super rad wind-powered knitting machine by Merel Karhof. We had to share this amazing device that beautifully knits tubes using only wind power! The idea initially came to Karhof as she walked by cul de sacs and noticed a consistent breeze flowing outwards. She decided then that she would come up with way to harvest that free energy source and put it to good use. The result – the “Wind Knitting Factory“.
