Artist Jaroslaw Koziara grew this gigantic ‘crop circle’ fish on fields between Horodyszcze (Poland) and Warez (Ukraine) for the Land Art Festival. He wanted to symbolize the history of unity and of trade along the border between the two nations, showing that nature and culture exist beyond the geo-political borders laid down by humans. The artist grew the installation by sowing 23 kinds of plants along the border in the shape of two fish. Speaking about the project, Koziara said: “Ukraine is not a part of the Schengen area and thus is the dividing line for the whole European continent. But artists cannot agree with that – this is how we create ideas that bring to life extraordinary border defying projects.”

Designed for Abu Dhabi‘s Masdar city, the project takes its inspiration from the way wheat fields blow in the wind.

The ‘Land Art Generator Initiative’ Combines Art with Energy Creation

The power of art is often described as being emotional, healing, ethereal, and inspirational. But in the context of the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI), art’s power is as literal as that: power. An international design competition launched this January, the LAGI calls for artists around the world to submit designs for a new land art/environmental art installation that shoots to not only deliver a compelling aesthetic, but also give real-life added value in the form of large-scale, clean energy generation for thousands of people. As this exciting competition draws to a close next month, we’ve caught word that a number of works will not only be set for public exhibition later this year, but more impressively, the most successful proposals will also be tendered for construction!

BOOK REVIEW: Mushroom|Clouds by Chris Drury

Land Art is, historically, HUGE. Ginormous. It is art that is heaved and coughed and carved into the hardest and bitterest corners of the suffering planet, art that says “humans were here.” Artist Chris Drury knows — he came of age in a generation of land art giants: Robert Smithson, Michael Heizer, guys who made their art with dump trucks and backhoes. A few years ago Drury found himself working in the middle of a desert — not because he had an itchy bulldozer butt — because the Center for Art and the Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art exhibited a collection of his works: Mushrooms|Clouds. What’s important about this exhibit? Drury doesn’t make “Land Art”. He makes something of a more collaborative spirit.
