Here’s one design that really “cleaned up” at New York Design Week – an LED lamp disguised as a broom. Spotted by our editors at ICFF, the MoodBroom by Peteris Zilbers looks like a mundane mop at first glance, but upon further inspection, you can see that it is actually a source of light. The quirky design is named for the fact that its light color can be switched to match the owner’s mood, and the humorious lamp had showgoers doing double-takes all day long.

New York-based Rux Design unveiled its playful LED StickBulb lighting system at this year’s New York Design Week. Designed and manufactured at RUX’s workshop in New York City, this simple lamp is crafted from a variety of salvaged maple and sunbleached ipe wood from the Coney Island Boardwalk. The wood is fashioned into simple stick frames, with small LED bulbs embedded along the edges of the structure.

Candles can transform nondescript spaces into soothing and romantic scenes, but they can also be a fire waiting to happen (considering 5% of all home fires are started by candles), and a smoky, waxy mess that lowers your indoor air quality. The LED candle light is a product that provides the warm, flattering illumination of the real thing without the worry, smoke and carbon in the air, and unlike a wax candle, it can be reused almost ad infinitum. Even cooler, the latest version of the LED candle doesn’t even need to be turned on and off via a switch – to put out the light, just blow it out. This hybrid lighting design by David Markus utilizes two methods of power. During the day, light is brought into the room through a parabolic lens on the roof. At night, the lamp provides light from a set of low-power LED’s beneath the shade. By using the sun to power the device, the lamp to consumes little to no energy from the grid.

Electricity blackouts in the United States have skyrocketed over the past two decades, making it all the more important for homeowners to have backup systems in place in case their power goes out. With that in mind, the LED Power Outage Lighting System is a product that is able to detect a power outage and automatically send a signal to turn on bright, battery-powered lights installed throughout the home. The goal, says online retailer Pegasus Lighting, is to ensure children and elderly individuals never face that unpredictable plunge into darkness. The system is priced reasonably at $89.99 and includes two LED ceiling lights, a path light, and a power outage detector/detachable flashlight that will all turn on automatically if the power goes out.
