This hybrid lighting design by David Markus utilizes two methods of power. During the day, light is brought into the room through a parabolic lens on the roof. At night, the lamp provides light from a set of low-power LED’s beneath the shade. By using the sun to power the device, the lamp to consumes little to no energy from the grid.

With that in mind, the LED Power Outage Lighting System is a product that is able to detect a power outage and automatically send a signal to turn on bright, battery-powered lights installed throughout the home. The goal, says online retailer Pegasus Lighting, is to ensure children and elderly individuals never face that unpredictable plunge into darkness. Meinhardt’s “Hopscotch” installation, showcased at the Vivid Sydney light and music festival, had visitors hopping up and down to create their own LED light rainbows. If you’ve ever been told to reach for the moon, we have the perfect light for you. Japanese designer Nosigner has created a gorgeous spherical lamp that puts the whole moon in the palm of your hands. Inspired by the super moon that shined down on March 19th, Nosigner create a topographically-accurate replica in the form of a LED light. In Japan, the moon is a light of hope, something that Nosigner knows the Japanese need more than ever right now as they rebuild after the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Inspired by cityscapes, this customizable light by Yasser Jamani allows individuals to get a taste of urban planning by letting them choose the shape of their own skyline. Using a perforated aluminum grid-like format, the lamp enables one to cut out the exact shape they’d like to let light shine through, creating an individualistic approach to energy-efficient lighting. LED strips which consume only 6-watts of power are surrounded by a reflective foil that enables light to bounce, dispersing it further and creating a unique visual effect.
