Heliospectra’s new LED lighting system has been chosen by the German Aerospace Center (DRL) as part of the EDEN (Evolution and Design of Environmentally-closed Nutrition sources) research initiative. The Institute of Space Systems in Bremen, Germany, will use Heliospectra’s advanced lighting technology in its research to develop bioregenerative life support systems for use in remote locations both here on Earth and in outer space.

This month, Philadelphia residents will get a chance to play Pong on what’s being described as the world’s biggest video game screen. It’s a classic marriage of modern architecture and arcade gaming. Beginning next week, Drexel University professor Dr. Frank Lee will be hosting a Pong tournament that will be played on the facade of Philly’s 29-story Cira Centre. Using hundreds of embedded LED lights that will be gamers sitting about a half-mile away, the classic Atari video game will come to life on the side of the building.

A few years ago Uncharted Play unveiled designs for an energy-generating soccer ball that can generate power through play—and now the company has launched a Kickstarter campaign to go into full-scale production of the SOCCKET ball. Able to power an LED light for three hours after just 30 minutes of play, SOCCKET’s creators intend for the ball to provide a fun source of much-needed electricity for young people in the developing world—in areas where many still rely on kerosene lamps or candlelight in order to work after sundown. With their Kickstarter campaign rapidly gaining support, Uncharted Play hopes to be able to ramp up production of the SOCCKET to distribute the devices to communities in need around the globe.

Walgreens just announced plans to build what the company believes will be the nation’s first net zero energy retail store – complete with solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal technology, energy-efficient building materials, LED lighting and ultra-high-efficiency refrigeration. The store will be located in Evanston, Ill., at the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Keeney Street, where demolition of an existing Walgreens store now is under way. Engineering estimates — which can vary due to factors such as weather, store operations and systems performance — indicate that the store will use 200,000 kilowatt hours per year of electricity while generating 256,000 kilowatt hours per year.

Canadian designer Tat Chao has transformed discarded glass into a heterogeneous collection of recycled BIPOLAR lamps. Each lamp is made from a pair of wine glasses or champagne flutes that have had their bases removed. The glassware is collected via donations or second-hand shops before it is meticulously handcrafted in Montreal, Canada.

Designed for a hotel chain in Cape Town, South Africa, the Cantilever Light by UK-based designer and architect Dr. Margot Krasojevic looks unlike any lamp that we have come across. The tube-like structure is comprised of a 5V LED strip housed in a tempered glass casing, which is balanced on a brass tube frame, offering a counterweight to stabilize the cantilever projection.

Portuguese energy company StarEnergy recently unveiled the INTI Solar Charge Point, a solar-powered charging station for mobile phones, tablets and laptops that can be installed in public spaces like parks, beaches, airports, bus/train stations, cities or even be used temporarily in open-air events. In its basic version it comes with Wi-Fi distribution, and in upgraded versions it can include video vigilance, LED lighting and support for advertising. The model has autonomy for two days without sun, provides Wi-Fi signal distribution 24 hours per day in a range of 150 meters and could charge 2000 mobile phones per day, with a 15 minutes charge each.
