Here’s one design that really “cleaned up” at New York Design Week – an LED lamp disguised as a broom. Spotted by our editors at ICFF, the MoodBroom by Peteris Zilbers looks like a mundane mop at first glance, but upon further inspection, you can see that it is actually a source of light. The quirky design is named for the fact that its light color can be switched to match the owner’s mood, and the humorious lamp had showgoers doing double-takes all day long.

By now, most of you have probably heard about the incandescent light bulb phase-out starting this year (likely as a result of the ridiculous political bickering about the lighting legislation in the count-down to the end of 2011). However, a quick survey of your friends will reveal that few of us actually understand what it entails. The law is merely a way to encourage consumers to purchase more energy-efficient light bulbs – such as LEDs – that will save money and energy, both resources that we could all use more of at the moment. If you’re still unclear about what the incandescent phase-out means in terms of what kinds of light bulbs you’ll be able to find at stores in the coming years, or how you can switch to LED light bulbs while still maintaining the same quality and quantity of light supplied by your old incandescents, read on as we spell it out for you in our easy guide. We recently showed you Ryosuke Fukusada‘s innovative and playful designs, which include wooden light bulbs and tiny cakes shaped like furniture; his recent project, Net Lamps, places efficient LED lamps as glowing orbs suspended within crocheted nets. Hanging Net Lamps combine elastic Poly-net knitted into a tight column, which, suspended from metal loops on the floor and ceiling, hold the lamp in mid-air as it softly illuminates the unusual surrounding fabric.

Two years ago rock climber Dan Freschl quit his job as a battery engineer and set to work designing an environmentally friendly headlamp that didn’t rely on AAA batteries to function. After two years of work, the Bosavi headlamp is a reality. Bosavi features a custom-made, long lasting, USB-rechargeable lithium polymer battery, a 110 lumen high-intensity LED, and an intelligent design that affords user customization and better reliability. Additionally, Bosavi’s packaging reduces waste as it converts into an origami lantern that attaches to the headlamp and folds flat for travel. Candles can transform nondescript spaces into soothing and romantic scenes, but they can also be a fire waiting to happen (considering 5% of all home fires are started by candles), and a smoky, waxy mess that lowers your indoor air quality. The LED candle light is a product that provides the warm, flattering illumination of the real thing without the worry, smoke and carbon in the air, and unlike a wax candle, it can be reused almost ad infinitum. Designed to increase safety while cycling at night, designer Mitchell Silva created a clever light system that integrates LEDs into a bike’s handlebar. Dubbed Glo-Bar, this simple idea consists of low-energy lights placed along the handlebars to illuminate the road and improve a cyclist’s visibility to oncoming traffic. The biker can also use the lights as turn signals by simply pressing a button on either side. Thoughtful and low-energy, this glowing set of handlebars will make riding at night a much more enjoyable and safe experience.

Last year Ed Chew won our Bright Ideas Lighting Design Competition with a brilliant geometric Tetrapak lamp made of hundreds of strips of recycled packaging linked together with absolutely no adhesives. We liked the LED lamp so much that we ordered a couple. Now he has designed CORE which is comprised of both the original Tetrapak lamp and an additional layer of recycled coconut spheres!

Philips has announced that it will be launching the most energy-efficient, high performance light bulb ever made – the award-winning L Prize LED Bulb in stores on April 22, 2012, just in time for Earth Day. The bulb, winner of the U.S. government’s $10 million L-Prize, uses a mere 10W of energy to glow significantly brighter than a 60W incandescent bulb (at 940 lumens) – meaning it uses less than 1/6th of the electricity to output more light. The L Prize bulb retails for $60 but Philips will be discounting it to $50 for consumers and government rebates could reduce the price even more to $30. $50 might seem like a lot of money, but when you consider the energy bill savings each month, the durability and lack of mercury, and the fact that you won’t have to replace this bulb for 20 years, it becomes apparent how smart of an investment this is over the long term.

Torafu Architects designed a magical installation inspired by Yozakura, a traditional Japanese custom of enjoying flowering cherry blossoms during the night. Commissioned by Kaneka for last year’s edition of the Milano Saloni, the twinkling installation exposed OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display panels, gently floating within Kaneka’s dark space. Thousands of LEDs emitted a gentle yet robust light, reminding visitors of the cherry blossom petals that shine during spring nights.
